DRL's to hid?

Has anyone switched their DRL's over to hid? If so, where did you get your hid's? Thanks!

I think hids would melt the housings. Some guys have complained about that issue. LEDs look awesome, I'm going that route soon.

Good luck with that.

Remember the RS uses running lamps, not fog lights. There's a difference.

Here's a snippet from another thread...

Yea HID's will melt the housing, just get LED's and I would recommend AAC's because if they go out they have a lifetime warranty and you get brand new bulbs

All I want is to convert mine to amber conventional running lights, not LED's. Not super birght anything. Just amber stock finement lights. Do you think I can find those bulbs anywhere? NOPE!!!! I can't even find replacement ones should one of the stock white ones burn out. Who's the rocket scientist at GM that picked a bulb for those lights that NOBODY anyhere makes?

Ok. Thanks for all the input everyone. ACC is a good place to look into. I had some of their products in my last car. A bit pricey, but good stuff. Maybe I could get awsy with a 4300 hid replacement. Or projector lights might be the way to go.

Those projectors do look sick. Sucks that they require some cutting and zip-ties to install.

I upgraded my DRLs to HID. My local shop had my stock housing upgraded to glass fronts so it would not melt. Kelvin lights did the work in FL. I have Kelvin 8k HID bulbs. See pic below.
Same post I put in another thread.

What are your expectations/requirements? How much money do you want to spend? Will you be doing the work yourself? What is your technical/mechanical skill level?

I tried the led route and after months of frustrations, I spent money and couldn't be happier now.

I replaced the drl housings with OE fog lights. Housings are bumper interchangeable, but the reflector is different and beams can be aimed on the fogs. Less glare and can be aimed on the fogs. I used fieldgoal00 harness since it uses stock connectors and can be installed inline with stock harness. The new harness design allows light to be on day and night. Also, it uses dual relays to provide 12volt direct battery sources to get around the rs drl pwm power source when rs drl are on during the day in auto mode.

Other major benefits is the new battery tap can be fused with higher fuses to handle HID current loads. I ran a negative trigger switch to provide on/off manual override during day/night/auto modes.

Once the fog housing, wiring, and manual switch were addresed, I used SpencerHID's 25 watt 5202 HID bulbs with the matching 25 watt ballasts. He offers both 5202 and D1S bulbs in 5k temps that are in between stock and 6k too blue for my tastes.

Cost:
$200 for the two OE fog housings and OE harness to replace drl harness
(The $45 OE harness is optional. I'm just AR and sometimes OCD.)
$90 for fieldgoals power harness
$20 Light switch, misc wiring, connectors, heat shrink, etc
$150 5202 HID 25 watt kit 5k. (available in 4.3k and 6k)
$100 D1S HID replacement 5k

You can splice into stock harness and modify with parts to save money. Buy 5202 4.3k and keep OE D1S so matching headlight replacement not needed. Still looking at $300(fog housing & 5202) plus misc parts/wiring/hardware.

My setup is $$$ and not for the budget minded. I do not like half a$$ solutions just because of price. Just my personal tastes. I have a bright HID fog with manual controls, minimal glare, and hasn't melted my housing in over two months. Just wished the car came like this from the factory.

Not cheap or for the non technical/mechanical DIY.

How did you find a bulb with a p13w connector? How come you didn't just buy the non rs fogs and buy some 5202 hids?

Well see the housing were only 60 bucks more to be upgraded and ill have to ask what bulb he used. I know i have only about $220 in whole setup. That's Kelvin HIDs (2-balast 2-bulbs) and two oe housings that were upgraded. Just as before I can say the oe rs housings will melt the chrome backing. Kelvin even itself said the had numerous complaints from Camaro owners. I didn't have to run any extra fuses as well. The ballast plug right into the stock harness and I've had no issues. Its all on what you want it to do and how much you want to spend.
