Man thats a shitty story and I'm glad you got it all worked out and that USAA, my insurance company as well, did the right thing which they have in sveral times I have had to use them. I am currently watching a friends car while he is in Iraq and he did put it in storage and all I do is once a week i go and crank it up let it run and drive it around INSIDE the storage area just to keep the tires from getting flat spots and to let the rear end and tranny work a lil. He was gonna drop insurance on it to storage insurance but i told him since he is gonna have a twinturbo kit installed 1/2 through the deployment to just leave insurance on it cause it will have to be driven to the shop and I dont want to have to worry about him not being able to get the insurance started back on it and someone hit it on the way to the shop. He's been gone about 4 months and I prolly havent even put 40miles on it. I treat his car as if it was mine and the way I would want my treated. I have another friend that is gonna do the same thing with his vette and has asked me to do the same thing for his car and said I could drive it all I wanted but theres no way I will drive it cause my biggest fear whether my fault or not if it gets wrecked I'd feel like crap. So I understand you leaving your car with someone due to certain situations.

I mean don't get me wrong, the idea is good and all... but short of the OP editing his OP, we're going to keep getting this sadly.

I feel your pain. I let a buddy of mine store my Camaro, he wrecked it. Granted it wasn't totalled and only had $12K in damage, but I know partially how you feel. Sucks man!

First thanks for your service and sacrifices.

Next, U did the only option they left u. The girl put u in this mess and she has to take responsibility for her actions. Sounds like the friend stood up. But if he holds it against u, he was not a true friend.

U did it correctly.

tough luck

I am young and I do not believe in forgiving ppl when they do mistakes this big. Thats the point of making mistakes and learning. When you make mistakes you have to face the consequences and THEN learn from it.

To bad they get arrested but hey they knew the chances when they decided to joy ride.

You took the correct action given the circumstances. Ultimately, I wonder if her family would have been as critical if she had killed some children during her joyride...

This is an incredible story. The fact that you trusted someone to look after your car demonstrates the closeness of your relationship. This is a loss of trust beyond imagination. It is hard to imagine being in your shoes.

A couple thoughts to fodder...

1. Expressed permission by you to a friend to use car is where legal authority stops. That friend can not "sublet" permission to another party.

2. Screw her and your friend. I would do whatever I had to do to clear my name, my insurance rating and ANY future legal issues, up to and including civil issues. You can definately be sued. The driver (female) will also be a party in the suit, but the plaintiff will go after the person with the most money...you. Unless there is some implied tort law in your state, I would immediately do whatever I had to do to clear this up...feelings hurt? Oh well.

3. DO NOT get into ANY verbal agreement with ANYONE who had anything to do with this incident. This includes her parents, your friend, her parents.

4. I would call the insurance company, deal with one person, and keep dates and times of all contact with that person, as well as police department. Not a bad idea to show a good faith effort with complete air tight documentation.
