Thinking of Getting an SS

Hey all. I was a proud owner of a 2000 V6 Camaro back in high school and college. After I sold that car, I bought a 2008 bmw 335i. My bmw is coming to the end of its warranty, so I'm thinking about buying a new car. I've been leaning towards the 2010 SS1.

So let me ask a few questions. Are there any major problems with the new Camaros?

What about upgrades? I enjoy working on my cars, put exhaust, IC, downpipes, etc on my 335. What are some of the typical performacne upgrades people do on their ss's? What can be done to really step up the juice on these bad boys?

Both my cars have been autos, and I've always said that my next muscle car is going to be a stick. I read online somewhere that the auto SS Camaros are in fact faster than the manuals, is that true?

I really like my 335 and hate to part with it. What do you guys think, is it worth it?

We have a forum dedicated to this here. Mull around in there and see what are the common issues/complaints.

We have forums dedicated to performance here. Mull around in there and see what are the common, or not so common, set-ups people are running.

You'll be hard pressed to find someone that doesn't think the car was worth it on a forum dedicated to the car in question. Actually, pretty sure there was a thread dedicated to someone trading in their 335i for a camaro. Search is your friend.

Cool, thanks, buddy. I was actually coming back here right now to say nevermind about the performance upgrade questions, I just found that section. But thanks for the direction!

just answer one question. yes the stock auto is faster off the line than the Manual. However IMHO the manual is much funner to drive.

The short answer is, the car is well built and many of us have no problems. There are tons of mods and plenty diy projects avaiable.

We haven't had any issues yet. Our's is auto and is brutal. As far as performance mods go air intake and exhaust are a great place to start. If you can change headers on back you won't regret it. We're running a 3" from JBA all the way back and it is killer. If you want to get into supercharger and cam with the other stuff you will be blown away. You'll find pretty much everything you need on the forum and you should be able to find an answer to just about every question, with the exception of why men have nipples. Haven't found that yet.

Auto vs Manual? One of the most popular topics on the board. The pure numbers answer is HP and torque for the Auto is 400 and 410 and for the manual is 426 and 420.

The argument is generally that computers can shift faster and more accurately than humans thus making up for the hp difference.

I have the manual and enjoy the hell out of it and I don't think I am heading to the track anytime soon.

The Gen5's SS are wonderful drivers, great performers, and absolute attention getters out of the box and as I understand it the owners of the V6 equiped cars are enoying theirs in similer fashion. In summary the Holden designed Gen5 platform is a excellent over all value.............this seems to be the consenious of owners of both the manual LS3 versions and the Automatic L99's as well. I have owned the latter for four months now and have had no equipment or powertrain issues @ 9000 miles.

Which ever trans u like, get it.

I have a auto and don't like the way AFM (Auto Fuel Management) works, but that me. If u go to loader mufflers, several people have complained about the drone w/ the auto. I did not like it with the standard ones.
If doing it again would probably get the manual. Which is a lot cheaper that the Auto. W/auto u can get remote start which is not available with the Std.

Since u are thinking 1SS, U might want to seriously consider the 2 SS. I like the 2SS as u get HUD (Heads Up Display) which I like. U also get a updated stereo system. Heated mirrors. Universal remote controls. Remote start (W/Auto only). Steering wheel audio controls.

If you are going to spend the money, why not get the best model you can, which is the 2SS/RS.

you'll love the car bro. plenty of opportunity for performance upgrades.

as far as the issue of manual vs. automatic. I'll put it to you this way....... it's a MUSCLE CAR, therefore it should be driven only one way and that's manual !!!

My 1SS/RS w/6speed manual is hands down the best car I have ever owned. It has under 5k miles and was purchased Dec of '09. It's still a head turner. If you want leather, just upgrade to the 2SS and combined with the RS package you'll have luxury and muscle all in one.
