Bad news for future high-powered Camaros

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Plunging into energy policy, President Barack Obama is poised to give states a freer hand in curbing emissions from cars, and to get his government moving on fuel-efficiency standards that could remake the auto industry.
article @ msnbc

Somehow I hope we can leave politics out of this. But this certainly does not bode well for "gas guzzlers" going forward. Get em while you can!!!

there are some more powerful electric vehicles out there... more powerful than any V8 at the least.

If anyone is worried about speed, the electric vehicle will tear the road. If your worried about sound then theres a problem.

New standards on 2011 models! This is not something that we didn't know it was coming. IMO, don't really think this will effect our orders or the 2010 models. I hope not anyways. I agree though, get them while you can! BTW we will learn how to make anything fast, that will never go away! That being said, I am not worried about my order and don't think anything will be changing soon enough to make me worried! Still looking forward to my SS.

I wish rush hour traffic moved as fast as that pic shows.

The article isn't all correct anyway. They list the states that have adopted California's emissions standards. WRONG. Oregon only has a few counties that require emissions testing, not the whole state. I didn't read the whole story but I wouldn't doubt there are more inconsistancies.

We will always have a way to have performance even if we can't buy it new that way.

I can see it now...the muscle car of the future - all electric with a secondary audio system to output the throaty sound of a powerful V8. :(

Electric motors produce a lot more torque than internal combustion engines. But that sound you get from an engine will no longer exist... but if there's a will, there's a way.

This is true. I do think there will be some gap while technology catches up though.

Looks like I'll be going across state lines to buy my Camaro. Good job losing those sales taxes and fees, California. It is no wonder we're in perpetual financial trouble. I want to recall our entire looney government and start over.

Maybe so but GM will not spend too much time catering to specific states. It might make a high emmisions car and a mid emmisions car for everyone else.

This is just history repeating itself. We'll take a hit in the shortrun and then the auto manufacturers will eventually design performance into the current emmision regulations.

As much as I love the sound of a big V8 and smelling exhaust fumes as long as we maintain our reliance on fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources we'll be stuck between the proverbial Scylla and Charybdis; a diminishing, finite supply (especially domestically) and the accompanying environmental issues.

Electric engines are tourque monsters and will only get better as time goes on. As far as the sound, well I know it'll never be true to the real deal but they already have sound systems you can install in your car that will mimic the exhaust notes of high performance vehicles at their appropriate gear/revs.

The problem is that different standards of emissions require automakers to retool cars depending on what states they are going to. If the government is going to establish tougher standards, unfortunately it needs to be uniform for the Big 3 not to suffer from it.

And why does California always have to be the one state that causes problems?

I don't know. GM sells a lot of cars to CA. The possibility exists that any emissions standard enforced by CA may be implemented in all GM cars due to the large sales numbers from that state.

I'd be willing to bet they sell more cars to CA than any other state...
