Stroking...swap, core, shortblock/long..I'm confused!

Please excuse my lack of knowledge... When discussing getting your LS3 stroked and they say cost of the swap, engine, short-block long-block ...what is that? Do you go home with the same engine block you went in with or is the swap just replacing the crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings? What is the engine cost mean? And was is the whole short/long block discussion about?

I will try to help you a little on this, a short block is the block along with crank, rods, pistons and some times your cam/timing gear set-up. A long block is basicly a complete engine ready to go, you just have to put all your accessories on a bolt it in. Some shops have ready to go motors and take your motor in as a "core" that will save you a lot of money verses just buying the motor outright. Cost of a swap is what someone is charging to pull your motor and installing the new one. Hope this helps you understand a little with out getting into to much detail.

Wow...so most people arn't getting back the same motor that was in their car. I don't know if I like the sound of that. I guess I was under the illusion that my motor would be taken apart, the new forged materials put in and then re-assmebled. Is no one else concerned about getting someone else's block?

you can go that route if you want, might cost a little more, or you can always not give them a core and keep your old motor stored away somewhere.

Why would this matter, the short block is completely rebuilt? It really depends on who does the work for you and what you're willing to pay. Not all builders stock ready to go short block assembiles, and you could have yours built. Your car will out of service longer though.

I'm having the LS3 pulled from my car and going back in with an LS9. the block may or may not have been used, am I concerned about that, no... Why, My builder uses an, expensive for a reason machine shop.

The replacement block, is fully inspected and built to extreme tolerances. they build motors, have various builders run them in cars, and then break them down to check bearing wear, cylinders, crank etc....

its like most anything else, you get what you pay for...I have no problem using a motor (short block) that may have run in some other vehicle...It'll be sleeved. In the cylinders, center line bored, decked etc...

All this, to mount twin turbos running as much as possibly 17. Lbs of boost' for potentially 1000 flywheel hp.... I'm putting my Brandi in the shop in about two weeks...

Any shop will do this but know that it will take considerably longer to get your car back.

What difference does it make who's block you have. Basically that's all that's reused in the process. EVERYTHING else will have been replaced with better/stronger parts. Blocks are blocks and will be reused for a long time, provided they haven't been bored to hell or had a rod put through the walls.

I think that maybe the OP might be concerned with keeping his drivetrain numbers matching even though it will not be all original. I'm with him if that's the case, I would rather wait a little longer just to keep my drive train all "original"

Yes...that is a big part of my concern. I also know what my engine has been through to that point. I don't want the guy's that got his stroked/rebuilt becuase he melted or broke his pistons, blew an O-ring..whatever

Concerned of #'s matching?

To What?

All blocks either L92's or Ls3's all have the same part#.

There are no serial numbers on a block that specifically match your car.
