Just so I'm clear here, if we have the roller skate brake pads (which I do) we can't go ANY smaller than 20" at all? Not even 19s work?
Secondly, why would they add the roller skates if they weren't needed? I'm reluctant to cut them off, but hoping to avoid buying 20" winter tires and swapping them on and off twice a year

Only 20s seem to fit the roller skate brakes. I've yet to see anything less clear. There might be some obscure 19 somewhere that has the outer brake caliper clearance, proper offset, and roller skate clearance, but to date I've not seen one.
Rollerskates were a half-assed solution to a common problem. Call it a band-aid fix. Some customers reported having the brake pads squeal, which is caused by pad vibration. The weights dampen the vibration (reduce the resonant frequency) and help prevent the noise. Not all cars exhibit this noise, but they just made the skates on all of them to prevent it. What is interesting is that our rear calipers are identical to the rear calipers on the 2009+ Cadillac CTS-V. Those do not have roller skates on them. I can live with a little brake squeal. Every performance brake on every performance car I own has exhibited some level of brake noise. It is the price we pay for being able to stop well.

I don't have the roller skate weights; I have the original weights for an early SS. I have 19 x 9.5 with 28mm offset and they fit just fine. I'm running 275/40-19's for tires but they're summer tires. We don't get snow here so I don't need winter wheels. The wheel/tire combo I have weigh 57 lbs each compared to the stock 20" fronts which weigh 62 lbs, and the stock 20" rears which weigh 67 lbs.
Reducing unsprung rotating weight is very beneficial to performance. Its a factor of 10-1. By reducing a total of 30 lbs of that, it has the same effect on performance as removing 300 lbs of static weight from the car. You can feel it.

I say cut them off if you want smaller rims.

This summer I hope to try 275's on all four 19" rims. After using the same size tires on all corners, chances are I won't be going back to the staggered setup. All said and done, I do not regret modifying the original brake pads one bit. I recommend doing the same. |
