Forgive my ignorance as I'm sure this has been discussed before, but what is the reasoning behind GM not offering a limited slip diff in the automatic? I just don't see how this makes sense.

It's only the LT auto that doesn't get one. My guess is that they felt the average V6 auto customer isn't "The Enthusiast" type. If they were they would have opted for the V8 or Manual.

Still doesn't make alot of sense. I am an enthusiast, but my wife refuses to learn to drive a manual. Does GM think that just because some people don't like to shift (I love to shift BTW) that they don't deserve the extra traction afforded by the limited slip? Seems strange to me...

Probably some sort of engineering concern. But I agree, Just cause you have an auto doesn't mean you are not an enthusiast and don't need an LSD.

This is what I'm thinking, but I'm at a loss to figure out exactly what that concern is.

If the average V6 auto customer isn`t an enthusiast then why does it have Tap Shift? Tap Shift seems pretty sporty to me.

The suspension on the V6 is softer for the same reason. It should have been an option like on Mustangs. You can trick out a '11 V6 Mustang for the track. That kind of configuration flexibility drives up the cost (slightly) for the whole line, I guess.

You'd think using two different differentials instead of one would drive up costs. Maybe there is a production capacity limit, so they don't offer it on their highest volume trim? I can't imagine an engineering problem that would cause it.

More than likely, someone at GM probably did a cost-benefit study and found it saved $3.38 per car.

What are you talking about? I have an A6 and it's got limited slip differentials.

If I didn't have a limited slip differential, I would only be able to burn out with the passenger's side rear tire, which is not the case.

If I brake stand it, both tires leave marks

which means limited slip diff.

That's because you have a SS, the LT does not have LSD ... The M6 LT does have LSD, in my opinion you don't really need the LSD in the A6 for street use.

My 1LT Auto V6 spins both. Not sure if it's a limited slip or not, but appears to be one, every time I've checked.

See, his post never mentioned V8 or V6, but he did say A6, which to me means Automatic 6-speed. And now JasonK is saying his automatic V6 will spin both tires.

So, which one is it?
