Urethane bumpers, how strong are they?

Hey guys I just recently became a camaro owner (not even a week), and I have a question for you guys. I like to know absolutely EVERYTHING about my cars, and so I just did a few walk-arounds, got a feel for all the surfaces, general gear head type stuff.

Anyway, when I got to the rear bumper and started really fooling around with it, I really got the sense that urethane parts have come a long way. The bumpers felt stiff yet elastic enough to deflect any small damage. Yes, I know that they are still plastic, but it begs the question, how strong are they?

Are the materials durable enough to stay with you and your camaro for decades to come or are they simply like your next oil change?

So I really wanted to hear more from you guys, my newly found camaro compadres. And I know most of you will tell me to get a life and just drive, but just give it some thought

P.S. As most of you know the weather here in New York is about as shitty as it gets so it looks like I won't get to put some real miles on my baby until spring

These are not bumpers, they are bumper covers. The strength comes from the bumper reinforcement and absorbers behind the cover. In the winter &/or cold weather they become brittle and can crack with just a light impact. in the summer months they are much more durable. They are painted with a flex agent to take some punishment but I believe they are the most damaged/replaced body part on any car.
