Spare Kit for SS Arrived Today (Pics)
This is the first (most useful) mod that you can do.
The spare tire kit for my 2SS arrived today. Herein are some pictures of the kit. It's advised that if you have a flat on the rear to swap one of the front wheels and put the donut on the front. For me the swap would take about 15 minutes. I can swap all four wheels on my Chevy Tahoe in 30 minutes with no problem, and they weight about 95 pounds each. The Camaro is easy. The air compressor/tire sealant pump that comes with the SS isn't going to do you a lot of good if there is damage to the sidewall or a hole larger than a nail head. So what that will mean is that you'll be calling AAA or OnStar and waiting for two hours while your car is taken on a flat-bed to a Chevrolet dealership. What makes things worse is that not all Chevy dealerships stock our tires. I called two in the DC area as an experiment, and they told me that the tires had to be ordered. This could really throw a monkey-wrench into your vacation plans and make your wife or girlfriend very unhappy---especially if you are having to get a room at the Super 8 across the street from the Chevy dealership while waiting for your new tire to arrive. An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Get a spare or carry a 20" in the trunk. Yeah, it was one of the first mods I did...
The only problem is bolting the spacer onto a front hub. Its a bit difficult if you're alone - you really need someone to hold the brakes while you tighten it down. You may want to practice this with a large screwdriver or pry bar to wedge between the chassis and one of the spacer studs in order to tighten the nuts. I was able to do it, but didn't really get them very tight... probably good for a short distance though.

Carry a small piece of wood or something. Put it against the brake pedal and move the seat forward pressing on whatever you have and the brake pedal. With the engine running it will hold just fine.

I wonder where I could get just the tire. I have everything else already. What size is the wheel and tire? Any idea what car it comes in?

Do all of the parts fit in the space or do you have to mount the hardware in a separate location? Can't tell from the pics.

You can wrap the spare parts in some towels, the jack will fit next to the battery. The compressor has to just lay in your trunk or a bag. Gives you extra piece of mind when traveling.
