Header Size with SC?
Hey there, can't seem to find the answer in a search here so if there is a link to this question already can someone please post.
What is the ideal primary header size for a stock bore/stroke LS3 with a 2300 supercharger on it? Throwing a maggie on my car which I just purchased from Ted. I have gone through the header size thread testing that Ted did a while ago on a stock camaro showing three different header sizes but figure it may be different with a supercharger. Looked like 1 7/8" was the consensus for a street driven stocker. My particular application is going to be only the maggie, CAI, and headers. Primary use is driver (fun driver) but there will be the odd autocross and 1/4 mile runs though no more than a handful each year. oh,,,, and to beat my buddies Z06 in a roll on!!! Mostly wondering if the 17/8" still has the capacity for the added flow or is a 2" the way to go when supercharged with my application and mods. Thanks for the input. |

I got 1 7/8" LT Kooks headers with high-flow cats. My car has CAI and a maggie. I did a lot of research before deciding on my headers. I think the 1 7/8" is the way to go.

If you are stopping at SC then 1 7/8 will be all you need. If you are going to keep building up...cam, heads, fuel, stroking the motor, pulley down....then get the 2" ones

Just seems odd that a 2" wouldn't be needed because isn't it flowing the equivalent of a 500ci + motor with the charger? Looking at what most people seem to be doing is the 1 7/8" so must make sense to do that. Still learning and just curious as for me the price difference probably wouldn't warrant the 2's anyway. Thanks for the input. |

I plan on supercharging and a blower cam and I'm going with the 2" headers. If you look at Ted's test, the 2" did outperform the others and had no performance trade-offs. They are slightly more expensive, but I'd rather "future-proof" my build...especially since it doesn't cost anything performance-wise...just my .02

I would go with the 2" - After all - they do give more power!!! - NA or SC...

The difference in the 1 7/8 and 2" with forced induction is that you will see less boost with the larger headers due to less exhaust pressure. This can kinda limit power if the super charger is all that is added. If you add a bunch of other power makers then the 1 7/8 inch headers become limiting. If you are building for the future you can get the 2" and just just a smaller SC pulley to keep boost levels up until you add your other power makers...that's how I understand things at least....someone who knows more please feel free to step in

I just installed 1-7/8 ARH headers to compliment my Maggie and they did just that. From what I understand you can still go pretty big beyond this and they will be just fine. Don't know the negatives on going with 2" except for the loss in boost, but that can be made up for with a pulley change. I was told to go 1-7/8 by a few different tuners/builders so that's what I did. Car is a MONSTER now. Very happy.

The 1 7/8" lt headers are the perfect balance between air flow and back pressure with a sc. I don't claim to be an expert, but I think I did my homework on this. The 1 7/8" lts matcched with the 3.6" pulley on my maggie give me about 7 lbs of boost. If you are going to be going up to about 650 rwhp, then these headers are fine.
Larger headers will cause you to lose back pressure and lower your boost. |
