CAI and Exhaust Require Tune ?
Should a new car have a tune when you install a new CAI and a GM exhaust system? Not sure if it is needed but would like to know. Thanks

How important is your warranty to you?

Regardless as to what #2 says...
To answer your question... NO it is not required with just CAI and exhaust and you likely wont even throw a code. If you do it wont be very often and it wont make a difference. You can drive with the CEL on, no biggie. Now if you want to maximize the performance enhancement of the CAI and the exhaust, a tune will do that. It will cost you around $400 and your warranty. Not your FULL bumper to bumper, only any part that COULD BE BROKEN due to the tune. For example, if your radio stops working... warranty. If your engine blows from a bad tune (HIGHLY UNLIKELY), you gotta pay to play! My advise if your just doing the CAI and cat back (keeping manifolds and cats) dont bother tuning. The tune with those items will more than likely only pick up about 20 rwhp. Now, the car will run better and have better throttle response with a tune but it is NOT required. Hope that helps better than answering a question with a question.

Not that I want to jump on to quick and answer for him, but I'm thinking he means that the tune will add 20 rwhp on top of what the mods will do. I sure hope so cause I did a muffler delete and am about to add a cold air inductions CAI. If I'm not going to get any advantage without a tune I will be very disappointed.

I did the CAI and exhaust and noticed a difference.... EVEN more when I had Ted at Jannetty Racing build me a tune... WOW... Night - Day difference... AND I can flash stock back into it in 5 minutes, when I take it in!

Short answer to requiring a tune. No.
If you did nothing to your car and it was complete OEM, you'd notice a nice differance after the car was tune. More if its a A6. That being said, if the car was tuned, then you added your two modifications, you would notice a very slight differance, but nothing crazy from before you add the parts and had the tune. Add long tube headers to those modifications, and my answer would be differant. My goal is not to push away business from my tuning, but its to educate you in your modification process and save you money in the long run. If you can afford it, install those parts, but wait for tuning untill after headers are installed. If you can say the only modifications you'll ever do to the car are the CAI and exhaust, then tune it. Your wallet will thank you in the long run if you know what the goals for the car will be before the process starts. Thanks Phil |
