Sad day for Indy 500 fans
For all you long time Indy 500 fans, the "Voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway" Tom Carnegie passed away this morning. I wish he would have made it a little longer for the 100th 500 mile race.

I had the pleasure of hearing him live once at the 500, and many many years on the TV...Thanks for the memories...you will be missed.

I haven't been over to IMS in a few years, but for all of the years I went to either the Indy 500 or Brickyard 400, every time I walked through those gates at 16th and Georgetown, I was welcomed with that familiar booming voice with phrases like, "and he's on it!" or "A new track record!".
As Smoke said, when you heard that voice, you knew who was at the mic. RIP Mr. Carnegie. To me, you were as much a reason to attend races there as were the drivers and their cars. |
