I had a friend pulled over the other day just for passing another car. He was in a 45 zone and the car in front of him was going 30 so he changed lanes and pressed the gas and sure enough he got pulled over for exebition of speed. It happens. Plus like someone else said respect the badge. The only time I do not at least tap my brakes for respect to the officer when I pass a speed trap is when I am going the exact limit.

What department do you work for that has stepped up enforcement of the law for additional revenue?? We are facing layoffs in my department and not one Sgt., Lt., or Chief has stepped up to say anything close to the sort.

When there is stepped up enforcement, it's usually because a council member complained about a certain problem that the public informed him/her about.

Im wondering about acceleration during a pass as well. For example when I pass semis I usually hang back and then accelerate to about speed limit +10 to 20mph to get passed them quickly. I view it as a safety thing since I dont think hanging out along side a semi is very safe since many tend to lane drift quite often on the interstate. I am a long haul trucker myself so I see it all the time. I also do that when I spot someone talking on a cell or whatever in the adjacent lane or infront of me.

Ive always looked at is, as long as its in the rear view, its not my problem anymore if something happens. Ive always wondered if I could be busted for speeding or similar for blowing passed the speed limit to overtake a vehicle like that. I always resume normal speed afterward. Is that a discretionary thing as well? Never been pulled for it or asked.

also depends how the cop is feeling, if you are pulled up next to another sports car and take off like a bat out of hell, he could light you up for "street racing" even if you didnt hit the speed limit yet

I got my first ticket in 40 years of driving a few months ago for speeding while passing. I think the bottom line is collecting revenue, not Public safety.

Don't get me wrong, I hate slow drivers too (30 in a 45 type) and I have pulled people over for driving WAY too slow, but you have to be reasonable.
How is it dangerous to everyone on the road if I accelerate??

Well lets say you accelerate quickly when the light goes green, then you notice a car blowing through the red to your right, if you are able to stop in time the cars behind you may not. Drivers these days tend to follow too close to one another. If you accelerate quickly chances are the car behind you will as well and the car behind it etc.

It's not dangerous, that's just stupid.

Between traction control, Stabilitrack, and NOT even spinning the tires it's not like
the car's out of anyone's control, no matter how novice.

Pulling someone for doing that is harrassment, period.

Fast acceleration can get you a reckless driving ticket. I ALMOST got that ticket at 17 until the cop realized my dad was a fellow officer. Then I got my ass chewed out...

Ah, so what you're saying is that running a red light and tailgating aren't dangerous, it's the fault of the guy that accelerated a little faster than someone subjectively thinks they should have.

I wish we could have a more subjective legal system. You know where we could rely on one persons emotions and feelings as to what they thought was acceptable and not acceptable.
