When you are on D mode it is the normal tranny. When you pull the shifter, it goes to S mode automatically. As soon as you touch the paddle, it goes to M mode and so on. If you push the shifter it will go back to D mode. Unless you hage the 2 second paddle option, which I don't have on my eraly production car.
hOPE THIS IS RIGTH.

I am pretty sure the paddles don't work in D though, but I must admit, I've never tried it.

If you're in M and you touch one of the paddles, then you're in manual mode (and you use the paddles to shift).
The paddles don't work in D.

If you're in M and using the paddles, hold the rt. paddle for a few seconds to switch back to sport mode.
Watch the Driver Info Center.
It seems that the 2011 can use tapshift in "D" as well. At least thats what I have concluded reading posts from 2011 owners.

Works on mine. If you are in D and hit a paddle it will take you to paddle mode until you either keep right paddle pressed for 2+ OR until driving speed and gear remains constant for 10 seconds, then it will shift you back to D automatically.

I can feel a drive coming on .....

So I guess the next question is, how many owners leave their shift in M as opposed to D?

I think I'd be tempted to leave in M all the time.

I use "M" all the time and use tapshift 99.9% of the time, the only time I don't use tapshift is when I have a coffee in my hand and then I find myself dumping it or putting it in the cup holder so I can reach my shifter so I can use tapshift, it's addicting.

We don't street race of course, so this is hypothetical; I'm at a light and a 5.0 tang pulls up next to me, if I let the A6 shift to 2nd and he nails it, I am screwed because the A6 won't down shift. What I do, I mean did, I mean hypothetically, if you put it in M and press the paddle, it will not upshift to 2nd untill you press the button. At the strip, I put it in m and let it shift itself. Better et's that way. My SS is at the rev limitter instantaniously in first so in that hypothetical incident, you must be ready for the upshifts.

I am not quite following you, why won't it down shift? If you are in "M" just hit the buttons and you now have full control, am I missing something

I drive with the paddle shifters when there is snow and ice on the ground. I feel like I have much more control over the car that way. You can start in 2nd gear and everything stays 'straight.'

OK. Now I think I get it. You put it in "M" and by the time you reach for the tapshift buttons it's too late. Well if you could put it in "M" and hit the tapshift button at almost the exact same time would that help? If so here is the solution

No, if you are in either automatic mode and ease away from the light and allow the upshift to 2nd and you then floor it. It lugs and does not shift back to first gear. I use thje paddle to hold it in first so that if I ease away from the light and theothjer guy wants to play, I will still bne in first and will be able to accelerate rapidl,y. I learned this from my 87 camaro with the TH 700 automatic.

That's why I always use tapshift you have full control all the time, no surprises.
