I rarely use the paddles.

I got an auto because it shifts automatically.

Its going to be a B&M paddle shifter retrofit for the car, not a Hurst branded product. At least as of this point..

I tested this 2 years ago. It starts in first in D or M. It only starts in second in paddle mode if you stop without downshifting.

Probably because the 1-2 shift comes in very quickly if you jump on it so it is best to let it start in 2nd unless you really mean to do it yourself. Use it all the time in the city to keep AFM off with loud exhaust. Love the wind up and click it yourself. The best thing about an A6 is you can leave it in S when you just want to DRIVE and DRINK your coffee in the morning

I use manual buttons when I want to have a little fun, and get a little growl out of it.

I also use them when there is snow on the ground to start off in 2nd gear. You are less likely to spin on takeoff.

I played around with the differences between D and M this afternoon.

The drive is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better in sport mode.

And there is another advantage I discovered:

You know when you lock in cruise control and you might be going up and down hills, you always have to cancel or hits the brakes on the down hill part to keep your speed, right?

Well, I noticed that in sport mode it keeps the actual speed closer on the downhills.

Using the same downward hill, I locked speed to 30mph in D. It reached 36 mph on the way down and I had to cancel/brake to slow back to 30mph.

In M (sport) automatic on the same down hill, it didn't get any higher than 32 mph - RESULT!

JJ....it sounds like you're cruise control circuit has got a problem. The car should neither accelerate or decellerate uphill on its own past or below the set cruise control speed or exceed the set cruise speed while rolling down hill. Whether or not your shifter is in drive or sport/manual mode-cruise on. You shouldn't ever have to tap your brakes to slow up with the cruise on traveling down a hill in order you maintain a steady predetermined, set speed ( Cruise-on)............unless of course your set cruise control speed is faster than other automobiles in your lane, some other obstruction is or enters your lane of travel, or traffic signals require your slowing or stopping. A trip to the dealer may be in order.

I am talking about some relatively extreme up/down roads. Going up it does not break 30mph, but on the downward side, with the momentum of the downward slope it passes 30mph. Not with acceleration, just natural inertia because of the steepness. I am talking about a 30% gradient here.

I would agree with you if the same thing didn't happen with another car make/model also in cruise control on the same road.

The car uses acceleration to reach the top (not breaking set speed) and then once passed the lip has forward momentum on the downhill and passes the set speed.

I found other cars to do the same. It is just the sheer nature of the road.

See here;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise_control

Quote: "Such drivers should note, however, that a cruise control may go over its setting on a downhill which is steep enough to accelerate with an idling engine. Note however, that in many jurisdictions, officers cannot write a ticket for a violation of a speed limit due to a steep hill". Unquote.

So all I am saying is that in the downward hill circumstances, being in M holds the speed closer to the set limit than it does in D.
