I've been reading these forums for the last 3 months or so. I'm planning on ordering a 2SS/RS within the next month or two. My main focus has been on this section of the forum because I want to know what I'm getting myself into in regard to maintenance issues, dealership cooperation, etc.

Previously, I had read through the spoiler paint chipping problem that was prevelent on the 2010 YM, which didn't bother me. However, this thread scares the crap out of me.

Is it really THAT bad? Should I expect the new car to ding and chip without much effort, or is this isolated to a particular early-ish VIN range?

If anyone reading this has received a car they ordered in the last couple months and is having this problem, please speak up!

My car is a 2011 built Dec 2, 2010.. It's not just an early car problem. Don't get me wrong i love the car but damn. I'm really getting angry over how easily the paint chips off and when it does you can see how thin the primer/paint/clear is. It's the thinnest coverage i have ever personally seen.

I would like to know this as well. I was very close to buying a Camaro until I discovered this widespread problem. I am the original owner of a 2001 PT Cruiser, which also has a history of "thin paint" issues. I do not want to repeat the experience and hassle of keeping touch up paint at the ready.

Does GM plan to offer compensation to current owners and/or correct this issue in the 2012 production run?

BTW, this is the best forum on the net for all things Camaro! Sorry that my first post couldn't be more positive. But I am very disappointed to find out about the paint problem in an otherwise outstanding car.

I have 500 miles on my Camaro and there are paint chips all over the freaken rocker panels!!! It looks horrible. I have 2 other GM cars, both with over 130000 miles on them and no chips. None. This is absolutely ridiculous. I called up my dealer and gave the service department a pretty stern b***h session and they want me to bring it in so that they can look at it. I really hope they have good news for me when I go in.

Same issue here. Early 2011 build and still have the most sensitive paint I've ever had on any car in my life. My FIRST weekend of driving the car on regular roads no different from any other road I've driven my other cars on for hundreds of thousands of miles, and I had 3 nice gouges/chips on my front fascia - I think I had 200 miles on the car at the time. I know it happened on the highway when I got caught behind a gravel truck in a construction zone... I didn't see it in time to slow down and back the !@#% up... however, NONE of my other cars have chipped this easly, even after being stucked behind MUCH worse than that and driven as DDs year round. I'm so paranoid to even drive it anymore because of this... :-/

This is the only thing I'm not satisfied with about this car. Doesn't make sense.

More dings and chips that my cts had in 6 yrs. Also have a 10 traverse with 12k on it. Zero chips or dings driving on exact same roads daily. Camaro paint blows chunks.
So who did your chip repair? You or did a body shop do it. Would like to know how you accomplished this.

I had 2 small chips within days of driving. Less than 150 miles. Took it back in to dealer and they sprayed the bumper for free as the car came new with a cracked DRL with water in it they had to replace anyways. They wrote it up as the chips were there when i took delivery so it had to be repaired at no cost to me.

I had a small ding on the door that did not affect paint. Dealer did a PDR on it also for free.

Car is being dropped off on Monday to have a fender ding fixed that a police officer did when he opened his door into me.

Every chip not only went through paint but completely through the primer right down to bare metal / plastic. All of these were with less than 682 miles on the car.

Dealer bodyshop guys have told me this paint is horrible and they have repaired countless new Camaros for paint issues including several that arrived to the dealer with chips.

I probably have about 12 chips mostly on the gills in front of the rear tire. I got one on the roof and one on the door. Car has 12k on it. I am going to talk to the dealer about it.

Seriously!? That sucks :(.

Do any of you with the excessive paint chips in this particular location (around the gills) have the Quarter Flares? I really don't LOVE the way they look on the Camaro, but if it saves this hotspot from getting dinged up I might consider it.

Ugh. This is THE ONLY thread that depresses me about this car. I'm going to a local dealer tomorrow to do another test drive and I'll make a point to ask about this problem. I fully expect to hear the normal sales pitch about how it's not a huge issue, yadda, yadda, but maybe I'll get a straight answer.

I have taken mine to the dealer twice now to have the chips taken care of - about 30 so far. Driven daily but NEVER on dirt roads and she's very spoiled. I also maintain and detail it often. Frustrating how easily this car chips and am wondering how long this will last until I need a completely new paint job?
