those with barton shifters COME IN

did the install today took me a little over 3 hours to do. everything was fine, test drove it before final installing the ball and the mid piece of the shifter. well, when i went to test drive it again after everything was hard installed i had horrible vibrations and tranny noise through all the gears (minus reverse) AND neutral. man was i pissed bc it was a beast to do because A - i didnt have a lift, i did it on ramps, and B - i couldnt lower the transmission any.

well anyway took off the console plate to make sure all the jam nuts were on good and they were both on the shaft and the ball. (i figured that wasnt the problem hence the transmission noise) even dispite the vibrations it still shifted into all gears without a problem.

my question is the shifter plate that the 2 bolts go through that were on the stock shifter(looks like a shim), do we reuse that as well?? because i didn't see it on the instructions. it just said to reuse the 2 bolts. and did anyone else have similar issues with these barton shifters?

No, you don't reuse this. I still have some vibration/noise, mostly in 2nd and at WOT. Things to try:

1) Make sure the boot (underneath the car) is on good.

2) Teflon tape in where the (top) shift stick attaches to the shifter assembly, and where you screw the knob on.

3) Dynamat (sound deadening material - available at any car stereo store or Amazon) wrapped around the link rod between the shifter and the tranny.

Is it a grinding?? Or do you just hear the transmission?? Sounds like you either A need more sound deadening material, or B. Need to go back to stock because its just to loud for you. My straight pipes and long tubes cover most of my exhaust noise, but you will definitely have more tranny noise with the afterrmarket shifters as they are designed for performance in mind verses "luxury"....

no grinding, but a lot of tranny noise and clinging. it seems as if something is loose like metal vibrating against metal, but its from underneath and is not from the upper half of the shifter. i put some teflon tape on the threads of the ball and the shifter itself and no luck with that. its pretty bad though i would say, like i wouldn't be able to hear the radio well at a practical level. ill have to wait till the morning to troubleshoot this pig

There is just no way around more noise in an after market shifter.

If there is PLEASE let us all know.

In all sincerity if ANYONE has installed a good name shifter ( Hurst/Barton/MGW etc. ) and has had the same or less tranny noise than stock I would pay to fly you out, buy you dinner, and let you kick my dog. Then you can install the same thing on SS.

I installed my Barton shifter and used the factory knob. No noise. About 8 months later I installed an aftermarket knob and could'nt take the noise. I reinstalled factory knob.

just installed over weekend...no banging or clanking ..more click or thus when going in gear,
mush more precise...although my son says he now hears a slight suction noise..very very very faint..maybe the boot..but Im extremely pleased with the 6sp shifter and the black SS ball.!

Yep, I've seen a video of the install and the guy doing the video stresses to make sure you get the boot on right and shows you exactly how to do it.

Have had mine for almost a year and it is great. Very, very little noise. As good as it gets for aftermarket and I love it.
