I just tested mine and I have the 2nd gear grinding problem... It has done it before a couple of times, but even though I've been driving manual cars for years, I thought my left foot was just getting slow. I was driving out of my neighborhood at around 20mph, put the clutch pedal to the floor, then shifted fast into 2nd. It went into gear, but horrible grind like the clutch wasn't even disengaged... Then I did a 3-2 shift. Same thing. The trans temp was a little past 30. I pulled into the store parking lot (trans temp between 30 and first line) and made a few 10mph laps around it. I tried multiple 1-2 shifts and it made the same grind every time. I then drove it back to the neighborhood (trans temp just past the first line [110?]), tried it again, and it went into 2nd without a problem. The reason I tested mine was because yesterday I took a straight side road right after leaving my house and hammered it. Ridiculous grinding on the 1-2 shift at high rpm's as well. It seems in every situation, my trans temp has been between 30 and the first line (105?). Should I drive straight to the dealer tomorrow, wait until it cools down, then let them try and duplicate it? Or is there nothing wrong and I should just let the darn thing warm up before driving it like a Camaro SS should be driven. I mean, I've shifted lightning fast with every manual car/truck I've ever owned and NEVER had a problem, cold, hot, or otherwise...

ALSO: Mine is a 2011, has just over 1,100 miles and the last numbers of my VIN are: 134441. (Build Date 10/2010)

Brass "Sintered" Synchros

What is Brass Sintered? Some are saying "CENTERED" which is incorrect spelling.

Brass Sintererd synchros are made with a Bronze powder (added with friction materials) which is sintered onto surface of steel circle, then the circle is fixed on brass ring body. This is apparently the manufacturing process of the tremec transmission for the Camaro. As Rick pointed out previously, the Corvette Tremec transmission is carbon sintered which is much stronger.

It would make since to me that since there is the potential issue of warranty R&R on these low mileage Camaros, it seems that if folks switch out factory transmission gear lube to something like Royal Purple (like I want to do), then there is a chance the dealer will say "you changed the specified lubrication... so sorry but... Warranty VOID." Simply stated customer caused the damage!

I have taken my car in to the dealer to document the grinding and they write on the service ticket..."trans operating within designed specification." Obviously the tech didn't do much of a road test! So... as an owner I essentially have this notation on the car saying I can't shift! BULL TWINKIES!

So my next step is to take my car to a certified high end transmission shop, have them put my car up on the rack crack the fill plug and take a sampling of the actual OE gear oil and send it in for a metallurgical analysis. By doing this we should be able to determine premature transmission wear (brass and or steel materials) and/or failure of the brass sintered rings.

With this in hand and with a statement from the certified transmission specialist we would be better armed to take our warranty claim to the next level if our dealer is not going to work with us.

Regardless of dealer willingness, if the Chevy technician has little or no experience in the peculiarities of the Tremec trans, its specifications and setup, you might as well be going to AAMCO for a rebuild!

Just my two centavos!

By the way, I went to the local Caterpillar (Quinn in So Cal) dealer and picked up an oil analysis kit which is sent to a lab via US Postal Service (postage paid!). It cost me about 25.00. I am doing my sampling this week and will keep you all posted. I figure this is the "Least Invasive" diagnostics outside of the dealership. The results are suppose to be emailed to the sender by the lab.

Update and Vin #

As an update, my problem has lessened lately. My troubles correlated with a cold snap here in Texas. The problem only ever occurred when the tranny was cold, <50 degrees. I still have a real notchy 1-2 shift and an annoying notch between 2-3 and 3-4 every once in a while but no grinding at any gear for now. I might wait until it gets cold again and it does it again so I can reproduce it for the dealer. Only problem I see with that is that the dealership is not next door and the tranny will be warm by the time I get there.

Vin# might be in my sig but I'll give it here anyway:

I haven't had any issues other than a paint rub on my rear fascia because the gap was too tight. My dealer paid to have it repainted at a body shop of my choosing, no questions asked. I got an estimate and they cut me a check. My dealer is Rodgers Chevrolet. What dealer are you using? Some dealers can be pricks.

I don't like the feel of the 1-2 shift. But I have never ground the gears. I simply don't force it if it won't go easily. PM me if your dealer won't help you. I will contact my dealer to see what she can do for you. Any dealer can do warranty work. I live in DC and bought in Detroit because I felt my local dealers were dishonest and price gauging.

Supermans,

I have seen many of your posts and never commented as you are usually pretty fair minded. But this thread it seems like you are just trying to recruit people to your way of thinking. If you feel that strongly, I don't see what purpose you serve here other than trolling. I mean how much free time do you have to continuously surf a website dedicated to a vehicle you think is a piece of junk?
right!. i agree!..also,if the tranny's not right, you will sell it to some unsuspecting guy,and screw him too!..wow!..what a sweetheart you are!
f**k everybody,and yay for you!..nice guy!..just sayin!..grow a pair,and find another dealer to fix it!..don't try to f**k somebody else!..baaad karma!..just sayin!

I just picked my car up from the transmission replacement but the weather sucks so it'll be a while before I'll have a chance to really test it out! GM said that it's a brand new trans but I've seen guys with 2011's with the same prob so we'll see! Nice thing is that replacing the trans for me killed 2 birds with 1 stone....notchy shifting (hopefully improved now) and now I don't have to worry about my output shaft blowing up (my vin is under the 25,000 mark)!

Did it feel any different when you drove it home from the dealership after the tranny swap ?

Actually I was out of town so I had my wife and friend pick it up. I haven't been able to drive it yet, hopefully later this week if the weather improves!
