High Flow Cats Question?

I have my car registered in NC but will be moving to Cali by May. I plan to keep my car registered here in NC since I'm in the military. My question is, will I be able to pass inspection if I get High Flow Cats?

In NC,
as long as you have Cats in place (OE or Aftermarket) and your not throwing a CL light your good to go.
In Cali you can't change the Cats unless there go bad.
If the car stays registered in NC and you drive it in Cali, you will have to bring it back to get registered.
There might be an exception if you get deployed, but I'm not sure.

Note that you will not pass a smog test in any state that requires it.

I'm kind of confused with your statement. Are you saying that I have to get it re-registered in Cali or once my registration is up I have to bring it all the way back to NC?

Cali has smog test. If my car is registered in NC and when inspection is due will they smog test me there?

Military

As long as you are active military it can stay registered in NC. So whatever the inspection is in NC is all you have to worry about. If the car requires an inspection in NC as long as you are stationed out of state you are under a military grace period till you either ETS or return back to NC. My Inspection was out for two years when i was stationed in VA. Just show the cop your Active duty ID and you will be fine. if you get written a ticket just take it to the JAG and they will normally call the Judges office for you and get it dismissed.
thanks for your service by the way...

One thing that comes to mind is, what county are you registering the car in? NC has two different set of inspections...one set for cars in smog-controlled counties, and one for cars in non-smog controlled counties. You used to be able to tell the difference by the inspection sticker. If the sticker was Red, White, and Blue, it was a smog-controlled inspection. If it was yellow/white, it was not.

If it's of any help, I've passed Maryland Emissions with Hi-Flow Cats on a 4 cylinder engine in the past. All they did here is did a visual and checked the OBDII port for any CELs. I believe that is all they do these days for new cars in states outside of CA (correct me if I'm wrong).

One thing you could always do is ask a NC Highway Patrol or NC DMV Police Officer before buying them. Either can answer that for sure.

NC inspection is all the same now. If your car is 1996 and newer with OBD2 and higher you must pass the computer test. They just check for cel lights not smog. I live in NC and I'm an police officer. Btw there the stickers are no longer in effect. We gather that info through your registration now.

Oh thank you so much and your welcome also. This really helps since I'll still be active duty while in Cali.
