I haven't seen anyone mention the Pass-key III... Isn't this standard on the car? I'm not sure what it does but i know it's a theft deterent of some sort.

Pass-key III is a small transponder in GM keys that validates the key to the vehicle. If an invalid key attempts to start the car, the starting and fuel systems are disabled, preventing the car from being driven.
It's very difficult to bypass this system since the proper code is needed to start the car. Read more about it: http://www.pdqforensics.com/sec410010.html |

My red 2002 Trans Am WS6 was stolen last Friday in mid-day, literally gone in 60 seconds.
No one has touched my remote/key in the last 4 years EXCEPT for 2 weeks ago when I brought the car to the local GM dealer for 1 day for a "Service Engine Soon" light (was leaky vacuum hose - 1 hr. labor). I believe someone copied my (pass-key II) ignition key and remote, making the heist rather easy. I am still in shock. I want to prevent my new 2011 Camaro from suffering the same fate. OnStar is good, but it can be defeated: rip out transmitter or antenna, pull fuse, etc. LoJack is nearly 100% effective, but pricey. A self-installed $86 GPS Tracker box (do search on eBay) looks like an affordable backup to OnStar that a thief wouldn't suspect is hidden on the car. Has anyone installed one of these and does it work as advertised? |

In general, if someone wants your car they're going to get it regardless of what you do. The high-end guys just use a flatbed, 10 seconds and they're gone. A GPS jammer costs less than $100. The thing to do is make it as difficult as possible so that a non-specific car thief (meaning, not a thief shopping for your type car in particular) wants to move on to an easier vehicle. That's why locks are generally sufficient. The OnStar is just a nice bonus deterrent.
To the guy who leaves a holster in view, there is nothing that will cause a thief to want to break in more than a shot at stealing a firearm. Many states require the firearm be left in the trunk or glove box when you go into certain locations, and if they see a holster they'll probably just bust the window to search your interior and trunk. A firearm is a blue-chip investment for the black market. I wouldn't do it, if I were you.

Yep, one year safe and sound plan, just like our southern friends have. Also the three month XM radio.
I'm more concerned with vandalism, than vehicle theft. There's way more jealous pricks out there, than pro car thiefs. Camaro has what's referred to as a passive immobilizer. Good for a discount on my insurance. If someone wants your car BAD, they're gonna hook it up to a flatdeck and drag it up with a winch, before they'll try to hotwire it. |

I keep my car locked behind a gate with a bright light shining on it + camera at night.
At work, I park next to more expensive cars than mine. My car's daytime friends are a benz 4matic SUV, a cobra KR, lexus ISF and an audi tt. Screw onstar, I live on the US/Mexico border and if your car gets stolen, 9 times out of 10 it ends up in mexico - no onstar service there. I just have gap insurance. I dont remember if I got lowjack. Look it up. These days the most stolen cars are not really nice cars or even camaros. The most stolen cars in america are japanese cars from the mid to late 90's. Your corollas, camrys, civics, accords. Those cars have crappy theft deternts and have been around so long that thieves know how to steal them. Those cars are easy to break into and dont draw in attention so they are ideal for everyday thieves who need the car for a joyride etc. A thief driving in a camaro or even a nice benz is going to get a lot of looks and attention is not what a criminal wants. Just don't forget to lock your car and park somewhere visible and you're good.

Without the PASS III (which I was under the impression the camaro had), many of the newer vehicles in the US are difficult to steal without the key itself. That is why you often see much higher stats with the older model Honda, Dodge and Toyota vehicles. Onstar is also EXTREMELY nice to have with the ability to disable the vehicle and track location.....unless you live near mexico apparently

There have been a few stolen in my area using the tow truck method. There is no tilt sensor on the stock alarm system so if there is not a door opened, then no alarm. Has anyone installed the aftermarket system with tilt sensor that pages you on activation?

I would imagine the onstar, califonia club, 2 way alarm and if you want, an quick disconnect switch on the battery cable that uses an key would keep about anything from stealing your car, unless they tow it but your need to tie her down to an few trees/poles then haha.
