Hello,

I'm not equipped to take a picture of it now, but I will if it is required. I have a scratch on my trunk door, maybe 2-3 inches in length. It doesn't look that deep, but it is definitely noticable, since my car is black.

If I take the DIY route, how can I get it out? What equipment do I need?

If I take the professional route, who should I bring it to? I am in the Long Island, NY area (Nassau County), for those who also live in the area and have suggestions or recommendations for local shops.

can you hook it with your fingernail? I mean, can you feel the scratch? Typically if you can, you may be able to lessen the appearance, but the only thing to "fix" it would be paint.

Oh, I have touch-up paint for the camaro. I got it at the dealership.

Here's what I have:
Camaro black paint from Chevy Dealership

What I THINK I need:
Sander/Sandpaper
Buffer
instructions to do it

Okay, for touch up I recommend you look at this first:

The Langka is a great system. Dr. Colorchip is out there too, but with black it may show. I believe Langka will work with the touch up paint you got from the dealer as well.

Wish I could be more help, I can clean paint but not too good at laying it down.

A lot is going to depend on how deep it is. One mans 'scratch' is another mans 'My car is ruined!!'

The fingernail test isn't exact science, but it will give us a better idea of what you're working with and whether or not buffing will fix it or if you'll need to sand too.

I'd stay away from using touchup paint... it always just ends up looking bad.

Thank you. But aren't the lanka and dr paintchip products for paint chips, not scratches???

Also, coincidently, I believe it was from a human nail scratch. I'll have to take a picture of it. What does a scratch typically run in the professional market? Like, what's the maximum cost?

OP, you have not answered the most important question that was asked. Does your fingernail catch in the scratch? Can you hook it? If so, it is going to be beyond anything you want to try. If not, then you may be able to fix it. A picture tells me nothing about the depth of a scratch unless it is through the paint. With the paint being as flaky as it is on these cars, you do not want to even think about sanding on them. I know first hand as I touched a few at CamaroFest.

Take a look at some of the scratches that I have battled.

Keyed Toyota

Camaro5 Fest

Sandpaper is NOT for the novice.

Wet sanding is a no-no for the 5th Gen Camaro? Or just a no-no for a novice?

No no for a novice... you can wet sand almost anything provided you're familiar with the cars history and if its been sanded before. Factory paint is a pretty consistent thickness, but to avoid all concerns of having enough material to work with you need a paint guage... not cheap and not something for everyone unless you plan on doing a lot of sanding.

if its not threw the clear coat wat you wanna do is go out and get some polishing compound and rub it in for a lil bit and then go over it with polish and wax and it should take it right out.

ive never had a problem with turtle wax polishing compound. its like 2.50$ and i used to detail cars every summer and found all kinds of tricks to do it. wet sanding does work but polishing compound is much easier and quicker and safer. use a really soft,clean micro fiber towel and only apply a very litlle compound at a time. do not let dry cuz sometimes it can be hard to take out and will flake up
