I'd like YOUR input...

I am considering turning my all original 89 IROC 350 that my dad bought new into a mildly prepped autocross car. I would:

Add stainless steel brake lines and some good pads.
Add subframe connectors
Replace the original and worn out struts (McPhersons).
Maybe add some lowering (stiffer) springs or just replace the fronts.
I have a set of 15" firebird wheels I would put some good R compound tires on for track use only.
Yank out all the smog pump crap and disconnect the A/C.
Maybe a better set of gears... 3.55 or something.

THOUGHTS??? Am I insane for doing that to this car? I don't want to use the 2010. Something about tearing up a $37,000 car doesn't seem right to me.

The car in question:

I dunno...she's a beautiful car...I'd be *very* hesitant to do *anything* that would change how she looks.
If you can make her faster without changing the exterior, I say go for it.

There is something about a car with that many years on it, that looks that good and it is stock. It's the way she rolled off the assembly line. Very cool. I would leave it alone.

I don't think your insane at all. These cars aren't worth that much and by the time they are if ever ,you'll probably be in the ground. Enjoy it now. Might as well do an ls conversion while your at it.

It's your call but, if it was mine, I would keep it as is. Way to nice a car to tinker with....a real beauty.

You forgot the third poll option of "Sell it to NicksVSix".....I vote for that one!

Seriously, that car is beautiful. I love it.

I agree with everyone so far which makes it tough... Well except for the "give it to Nick" option...

I wouldnt change how it looks at all. I mean other then it may sit a hair lower but nothing else. The improvements would be purely to correct some issues with the car.

The front struts are shot... It bounces LOL. The cars are VERY weak between the front subframe and rear frame rails, subframe connectors make a HUGE difference in 3rd gens. The the stainless lines and pads just for safety. And the gears bc the thing has 2.73 in it and is a DOG off the line and accelerating which is all you really need for auto-x. It's not a "speed" race. It's all acceleration, braking and handling. The IROCs came with beefy sways and are actually pretty good performers with minor changes.

Well, as long as you're not changing how she looks, I say go for it...adjust the vote totals above accordingly.

But I still say you should sell it to me.

Knowing the history of that car and the work you went through to track it down, I would leave it alone other than tighten up a little for when you actually do drive it.

I think you should turn your 67 Camaro into a track car. I mean you already have it torn apart. Why not put an LS7 motor in it, and there are plenty of parts available to build a nice first gen track car. Just a thought tho.

You gonna fund the build?

I can build the IROC into a killer track car for about $2000...

The shocks and the tires are the killers. I suppose I could get non adjustables.

BMR subframe connectors: $200
BMR strut tower brace: $110
New sway bar endlinks/bushings: $50
Koni replacement adjustables: $600
Or KYB adjustables if they work with the McPherson setup :$420
Brakes: $200
Stickies on 15" firebird wheels: $700

Ho hum...
