Help...Is this true?

I saw this in another thread in a land 'far far away' lol...but wondering if it is true, etc. Doesn't make any difference to me...LOVE my Camaro...but was curious if it is true.

See below:

Oh, by the way - just in case nobody knows, the new Camaro is essentially an Australian vehicle (it's built on the Vauxhall VXR8 chassis, which is a family member to the Holden Monaro AKA Pontiac GTO), not American.

Well the platform is australian designed but its still GM which is still american and the camaro is built in canada with parts from all over the world have you ever looked at the sticker and saw what % of parts are american or sourced elsewhere. No car is 100% american i think.

Partially true. The Camaro is based on the Zeta platform, which was engineered by Holden of Australia. This platform is also used in other GM vehicles like the G8, Park Avenue, and the Lumina. There may be more but I'm not sure.

So basically, yeah, it's on an Australian chassis, with Japanese paint and electronics and built in Canada. Gotta love the global market.

Um...I realize it is made in Canada :P

I just wanted to 'learn' a little more before I made a fool out of myself if I were to get into a discussion. Thanks for your posts.

You should buy the book "Camaro-A Legend Reborn", by Larry Edsall. A great read that covers most questions one could have on the Camaro. Australia played a major part in creating the 5th gen. The only sad part was that GM had canned production of the car with the drivers wheel on the right side due to costs involved, which meant no Camaro for the Aussies who helped so much.

Definitely not something to be bummed about.

This.

Holden Australia oversaw the production phase of the Camaro from the concept car to it's current off the line form. They're pretty much credited for putting this car in your garage. Shame they didn't get a RHD version after the abundance of work they did :(

This was also part of that same post...

"Why not the Camaro and Challenger? Well, the Chevrolet Camaro has severe visibility issues, and while the suspension geometry is pretty good, the Camaro is overweight, and simply isn't offered with a powerplant that puts out enough power to make up for it - and the Dodge Challenger is an even worse case of the same issues. At the altitude I live at, these vehicles have trouble dealing with nearly-stock STi's and Evo's. Don't get me wrong, these fairly good cars - they just need more power, or need to go on a diet. "

I was going to say...yes, the last generation Pontiac GTO was essentially a Holden Monaro coupe. Actually, pretty much everything just like it except for the badges.

GM has had its share of mind-curling platform shares. Sharing platforms with an international GM division is of no concern to me.

The true blasphemies are:

Slapping a chevrolet badge on a Toyota Corolla (Chevy Prism)
Slapping a chevrolet badge on a Daewoo (Aveo)
Slapping a Pontiac badge on a Renault (1980's Pontiac LeMans)
Slapping a Toyota badge on a Chevy Cavalier (Toyota Cavalier - Japan)
Slapping a Chevrolet badge on an Isuzu pickup (Chevy LUV, and in part, Colorado)
Saturn buying engines from Honda (3.5L)

...the list of mind f*cks goes on in different ways, too...

The last true 'Made in America' Camaro ceased production in 1992.

Yes and no.

Developed on the Holden-derived Zeta platform, preliminary engineering done by Holden, but a good chunk of engineering afterwards was done in the US and Europe.

And Zeta underpins the Holden Commodore/Caprice, but the Monaro/GTO were V-bodies, not Zeta. Monaro/GTO were based on the VZ Commodore. Current Commodore is VE Series II on Zeta.

Its a Holden platform but its all GM. Some of these 1st gen freaks out here in AZ will try to tell you that the 5th Gen is not a real Camaro because it isn't a continuation of their precious F-body platform.
