Hey guys (and girls?) new to the forum. Just ordered my '11 1SS/RS like 3 weeks ago. Stationed at Ft. Carson but deployed to Afghanistan currently. Be home in like 3+ weeks so hopefully my yellow SS is ready to be picked up. Can't wait!!

Whether that is street, drag, road course, drifting or a balance between those applications. Clearly Ted and Garth have shown that the ZR1 corvette clutch cant handle their torque numbers. I have been searching high and low and find absolutely no actual true specs on the zr1 clutch other than it is designed to work with 604 lbs or torque. If its like the rest of GM engineered parts if you give it 605 lbs it will probably burn up. So that leaves aftermarket systems. Joe is putting a Spec Stage 2 or 3 monster in his car. I have a Spec Super Twin SS rated and certified at 900 lbs of torque. But you cant expect a racing clutch to be as tame and feel stock on the street. Chatter when attempting to slip em will flat send you to the dentist to get your fillings put back in. When they are engaging they are engaging and you are not going to gently get the power down to the track. Its all going and all at once. at a 3500 rpm launch I am putting down 730 lbs of torque so trying to slip that down to the track just is not going to happen. Don also has a similar acting and certified torque clutch and I will let him post up the specifications on his. But when talking to him he also has the same reaction regarding any attempt to slip the clutch...By the way I ran last year on stock clutch and used the slip method when at 570 lbs of torque and had some great 60 ft times. But the clutch only lasted a couple trips to the track at over stock torque numbers. fluid is very important i agree. I change my clutch resi about every 5 runs. Pump it and change it again. However, the new spec clutch is not putting near the debris and dust into the system that the stock one was doing. Anyway...get your but to the track Saturday and lets see the talk do the walk....and have some fun. Stick shift series races with qualifying starting at 9:30 am
The ZR1 clutch is rated for 800 HP and "tested at over 700 HP" from all the research I've checked. Now there is a 20% more Torque Capacity being offered http://www.lingenfelter.com/mm5/merc...gory_Code=C366 , which Lingenfelter so kindly traded my brand new spare clutch for..... so running the stronger version now.

Torque obviously is what really matters. But if adding the 20% to the 800 HP figure, the new "HP" number would be 960. I spoke with numerous companies and they all said this is not RWHP, it's HP at the crank. That being said, Ted's stroked engine is 690 RWHP and if 15% driveline loss, then 793.5 HP at the crank versus 800 HP rating. Not much to spare in hindsight.

Other factors would be gears, sticky tires, tire width, less drive line slop, wieght transfer versus contact patch, etc. .....that actually put the HP and Torque face to face with the clutch. Probably added to my toasty clutch. Nobody ever talks about these factors, only simple HP or TQ numbers...... much more complicated. What's almost funny after checking stuff out, nobody ever talks about if the X clutch is going in a Miata or a Hummer and how vehicle wieght factors in.

I wouldn't put a ton of faith in a "certified" number - still no guarantee nothing will happen and won't be warrantied, but is a baseline # to use for matching components as Larry says. I would caution not to match HP/TQ needs though, but to exceed what is needed. Then decide how much track versus street matters to you.

Now everyone can thank Larry, Ted, Don,
Brian, and I for breaking things so everyone else can learn from our mistakes....... but we all had fun doing it

I think the best break was Ted's shifter though! I raced him off the line and suddenly see him way back in the rear view mirror...... I wait for him after getting my time slip. Then he says "I think something is wrong with my shifter - check it out for me". I sit down and reach for the "missing" shifter that's laying over like a limp noodle - GOT ME! Then we talk with Pfadt's design engineer and Josh tells Ted, "well, you exceeded 240 foot pounds"..... "here's a new shifter for you". Then 2 hours later (even better), Pfadt breaks the shifter in their own car! Back to the drawing board and Ted (Popeye as Cheri nicknamed him).... if off the hook.

I'll probably jinks myself, but still have the coveted "Never been towed" ..... I spend my Tow Money on parts

Larry's getting it figured out, I give him another night or two at the track and he'll have his figured out.
Emmmm.... slipping clutch slightly one time doesn't constitute slipping it on a regular basis. Can't speak for Ted's shifting habits, but I think in hind site it was a power mismatch that I didn't catch either. I think my big burn started with the run that the pedal stuck to the floor and I'm sure was burning big time the entire time it slowly raised back up just in time to shift again. Having free access to hotlap, high temperatures, and kevlar blanket probably added to the equation. I looked at some movie clips and saw a run that appeared to be a burn out in the 60 foot, but clearly was the clutch burning instead of grabing.

The big thing to take home from Camaro5fest was the conversation we had with Lingenfelter regarding the clutch pedal return spring upgrade versus "Ranger Rick's" clutch fluid swap findings. Lingenfelter was at an event and "Ranger Rick" asked if they were having clutch pedal problems because thier fluid was so black. Long story short, they weren't. The problem is fluid expansion that kept the pedal just below the point that the OEM spring doesn't have leverage to return the pedal. They would run the clutch fluid much longer and never had problems with the pedal returning.

I still think the separate clutch reservoir is smart to do though. Doesn't make sense to get all the clutch dust in the brake system, and swapping fluid would just lengthen the life of the clutch hydrolic system.

I have spec stg2 on my camaro, and have driven the stg3 on a GTO and the stg3+ on another camaro. they seem to be ok, and you can slip the clutch on those. not sure how they will react on the track since the surface and traction is much better than on the streets, but I think they will still be ok. I have the ZR1 clutch on my Z06 and it worked great so far, no issues with slipping the clutch. few guys over at CF had some nice 1.5x 60ft out of those with about the same tq that Garth put here. but I am sure Garth makes more tq at a lower rpms.

sorry wont be able to make it this saterday. i will be in vegas for few days. but starting from next week, I will be available and would like to join you guys in the different events hopefully.
Bahahahaha.... Vegas.. you dont have to apologize for having to go to vegas. That does not sound like it is work related but sounds more like fun...Hope you win bunches and have a blast. And remember just cause they say theiy love you does not mean you have to go the the quickie wedding plaza and get hitched....lol Talkl to you later.

Great day at the track...well at least until the rain came and the event was rained out. Chris and Pepper made it and were running their normal consistant times. I popped off a nice 60 ft only to leave the time on the track by holding my clutch in thinking I had missed second gear. But still managed to break the 12 second barrier. DA was around 6000 so air was nice but on the downside 44 degrees left the tires a little cold. But I will take the 1.67 60 ft time any day for sure. B890 right lane. Oh I didn't lose to the 2011 Mustang 5.0 with a procharger..raced twice won twice. Chris and I got an extra run cause they left the pro tree on... wholly crap. Stage and it goes Green right away...Not fun at all.
