V6 - Premium Gas

I'm sorry if this is a covered on another thread which I assume it probably is but I was unable to find anything using the search

Anyway my question is there any harm in using higher octane (89/91/94) gasoline in the v6?

I've done a bit of research and found these reasons why you would use higher octane:

  • Clean your car's fuel injectors and intake valves — and keep them clean
  • Optimize fuel economy
  • Reduce emissions
  • Improve overall vehicle performance year-round
BUT

My main question is does anyone really think the difference in price is really worth it?

It's about $2.55 more a fill up here for 93. My Camaro is worth it.

OH I forgot to mention that I'm from Canada so gas here is more expensive also but not by a crazy amount.

Using premium gas in the V6 is a waste of money, seriously.
The engine is not made for that gas....you won't notice *any* improved performance at all. Much better to save that money for regualr maintenence and oil changes....that will help your engine's life and performance way more than using a fuel your engine is not designed for.

And as jmaryt said, the owner's manual says to use 87 octane.

You will get equal amounts of comments from both sides. The llt engine DOES perform better with higher octane gas. This is why the user manual say "or higher". The llt engine management computer can and does take advantage of the higher octane.

In other threads V6 racers have proven the information above. This lends itself to the next question..... Are you needing every last bit of power or can you save a nickel or two?

Either grade of gas will do no harm to your engine and either will have the same long term effect on longevity.

Excuse me but the manual says 87 octane OR BETTER

I have found:
Running 93 Octane gets me alittle better respose.
It seems it runs better not so sluggist.
It does nothing for horsepower.
And it does nothing for gas mileage
Running Shell 93 Octane with no ethenol, Cleaner tail pipes longer
When I run Enmark with Ethenol my tail pipes get dirty quick (more soot).

There are few benifits to running 93 Octane but I really think if you can get gas with no Ethenol that would be the best fuel you could get.

I really don't care if you run 87,91 or 93 Octane fuel. But again the manuel says 87 octane or better.

Nah - octane levels at most outlets have the same cleaning agents no matter what the grade. So running higher octane will do nothing for cleaning your injectors.

Actually it has been proven that when running 87 octane the computer has to pull timing where on 93 (or 91 can't remember) it does not, so there IS in fact a performance increase with using the premium grade. If it wasn't for the DI, our engines would be running premium anyway with such a high compression ratio that they run at.

I love these threads. If it was a daily driver and wasn't hot rodding around town, I would probably stick to 87 or the midgrade...but thats just my opinion.

  • Clean your car's fuel injectors and intake valves — and keep them clean
Believe it or not, agressive driving takes care of this, with any approved octane.
  • Optimize fuel economy
The difference would be negligible and unnoticeable.
  • Reduce emissions
Once again, negligible, and you didn't buy a Prius.
  • Improve overall vehicle performance year-round
Newer motors can program themselves for slightly better performance on a higher octane. Usually requires a ECM/PCM reset (pull the fuse)
