What do people mean when they say the stock wheels are really heavy?
I've been looking for newer wheels for my camaro for race tires.
Jurys still out if I can find race tires, but while I'm working on that I'm looking at wheels. Stock wheels are only 30.3 lbs (front) and 32 lbs (rear). Most aftermarket wheels are about 34-36 lbs. Some are closer to the 40s. The lightest I've found in stock dimensions is 29.2 lb front and 31.6 rear, which doesnt seem like enough weight savings to justify spending more on non-stock wheels? Some high end race wheels are down in the 24/26, (or really high end even lower) but still, for as much as I hear people complaining how rediculously heavy the stock wheels are, they really aren't that bad, are they? Is there something I'm missing?

2010 Camaro SS modified extensively. I stretched the body to make it a 4 door, but I swapped in the 3.6L DI V6 for fuel economy. Then I picked up a corvette body around the V8. I also swapped the body for a C2 Z28. (In short I traded it for three cars, a Corvette Z06r, a C2 Camaro Z28, and a Cadillac CTS Summer Performance package 3.6L DI with Aisin 6spd.)

Thats because 20's are just plane heavy, they are not good for racing no matter what brand. If you want racing wheels I would suggest 18-19's to shed some wieght.

I was looking for the longest time to reduce wheel weight.. But, I'm not paying the ridiculous money some vendors want for their wheels... I'll probably just stick with stock wheels with better tires or get a nice set of aftermarket wheels that are a little lighter but not overpriced..
If you want to reduce some rotating mass w/o breaking the bank.. Look in to Racing Brake rotors. |

You must be shopping cheap cast wheels, as most of those ARE heavier than OEM. Here are the weights for the Forgestar wheels, for comparison.
Wheel Sizes/Weights: 18x8.5 = 19.5 18x10 = 21 lbs 18x11 = 21.5 lbs 20x9 = 26.5 lbs 20x11 = 28 lbs 22x9 = 29.5 lbs 22x10.5 = 30.0 lbs They are wider and lighter than stock. Flow-formed wheels are lighter than cast wheels. Not all forged wheels are light, it depends on who builds them and if they are based on performance or appearance only. All of these trendy concave, extreme lip, etc... type wheels are also heavier. The flatter the face on a forged wheel, and the fewer spokes it has, it is generally lighter. Tony

You must not have priced the Racing Brake rotors. My 18x8.5/18x11 Forgestar F14 with 255 fronts and 315 rear drag radials were $180 more than the Racing brake rotors.

Take one off your Camaro and try to put back on by yourself. That's what really heavy means.

Maybe someone doesn't want to swap out wheels and tires but want to lower mass? That's the same cost roughly and same weight savings -- just by different means. |

60 lbs rotational weight savings with 18" F14 Forgestars and tires $2,145 You must have a different meaning of the word roughly.
