Double clutching is called double clutching for a reason. You need a clutch. To double clutch you must match the rotational speed of the input shaft being driven by the engine to the rotational speed of the gear you wish to select. Which means you must push in the clutch, throw the shifter into neutral, rev up the rpms to match the transmission and engine rotation, and then push in the clutch and throw it into a lower gear.

You are confusing double clutching with double shifting.

Double clutching is mainly used for rally type driving though, but the synchronizers they have in cars these days work so well its almost not needed. It's just fun and cool and saves your transmission a little bit of work.

manual and automatic options confirmed. considering the source, the auto tranny option will offer a paddle shifter, of some type.

I'd prefer the manual gears option, although the Maro will be the first car I've ever intentionally bought with same.

paddle shifters are for 'Lambo and Ferrari owners that can't be bothered with a manual.

Otherwise, non-paddled autos are things to be controlled by the throttle. Otherwise, cost factors play a major role.

My .2c. YMMV..

Oops, Sry for the false info, then, on the GXP.

After thinking about it, I kinda want to change my vote now. I drive the same way so paddles wouldn be too good for me, so i want to go with the tiptronic (that just sounds cool).

It's just a new user interface for the same old transmission. It's a more ergonomic way to control what gear you're in than by reaching for the floor or column shifter and dropping it to, for example, "2". Some have more obedient programming than others, some have faster shifting (which I think is due to higher line pressure) than others, etc.

The exception to the rule is when it's NOT the same old transmission. When it's a computer-operated manual, such as a DSG or SMG (found in German and exotic sports cars), it's got some different driving characteristics.

I don't know how common that is, but the VW GTI has both.

As for me, almost certainly the stick.

If I got the auto, or if there was an automated manual, I'd want paddles on the wheel and some kind of decent control (slide or +/- buttons) with the shifter; different situations call for different interfaces.

This is the main reason I'm not going to order my 5th gen right away. I want to test drive the auto w/ paddles first. I have a six speed now, but the idea of paddles impresses me to the point that I will wait to see how quick the tranny responds, how the feel is, etc.

I like the idea of paddles. Like most of the other posters, I like that they're right by the wheel.

Paddles are very nifty and to be honest, it just feels badass to use them. Another thing that no one is thinking about is that if you want to drive with your hand at the top of the wheel you can, just put it into straight automatic mode. You don't always have to use the paddles if you don't feel like it. But when you want to fly, put both hands on the wheel, and use your God-given opposable thumbs to shift the bad boy.

I used to hate the idea of paddle shifters too. That was until I sat behind the wheel of a new Corvette with them. Jesus they are sweet.

I voted for the paddles but, IMHO, unless it's a true manumatic-like transmission, like M3s have had, I think it's almost pointless, and only a novelty. Since it doesn't look like the ZR1 is going to have that kind of tranny as an option, I'd prefer a good 'ole six-on-the-floor

I'm not quite sure how your hands are shaped, but when MINE are on the steering wheel, my thumbs are on the front of the wheel, and it would be my fingers that would have to hit the "paddles"...which in reality are just little tiny buttons on the back side of the steering wheel.

I wouldn't mind using them, if it was more convenient, but like others, I normally drive with one hand at the top of the wheel.

That comment was made almost a year before the Camaro went into production ...

POst resons and discussion below!!!!!
I test drove an automatic 2SS with paddles and rented a 2LT also with paddles. The only time I can say I wish I didn't buy a stick is when I'm in two plus hours of bumper to bumper traffic. Happened once going to a company paid for Monday Night Redskins/Eagles game.

imo, if u want a stick feel, just get stick. I think the Paddle Shift is a better idea. However, I hate GM's decisions on the paddle shifters. (Buttons, stuck on the wheel, etc).
