If you haven't replaced your cats then this is why. The stock cats are the most restrictive point on the exhaust. 4 800 micron filters trap so much sound. If you don't want LTs, grab a set of HF cats to eliminate 2 of those things and it will be like night and day. Believe me...before i put LTs, I put solo HF cats on and it made all the difference in the world. You won't throw a CEL either.

Well, I have been going back and forth on this subject and that is the reason I started this thread. The car doesn't sound bad stock.... it just seems to be a little too timid sounding. I have heard the Borla Touring,(not aggressive enough) the Borla S ( just about right) and the Borla Atak ( too aggressive). I found a Borla S catback system for $1085 (includes shipping) but have yet to order it. Now I am wondering if I want to spend this kind of money plus installation and where am I going to store the stock exhaust. Decisions decisions!

In a word: No.

Saving up for a system with a little more bark and rumble.

I knew it was time to replace the stock exhaust when I drove over to my friend's house and he commented that my car sounded too quiet for a muscle car! I went with the Borla ATAK cat back. I heard my buddy's Flowmaster exhaust on his 1987 IROCZ and I was stunned! But, I'm happy with my choice. I'll be doing LT Headers next...

i honestly want to talk to GM and ask who was in charge of the stock mufflers. didn't some body ever say the stock cans hanging down look so bad. challenger, mustang, STI, evo, 370z etc all have better looking mufflers. i will always flame GM for doing that.

the stock exhaust it pretty quiet, i could never keep it that quiet.

So some people are willing to spend how much money not to improve performance (there are several threads that show that the stock exhaust system performs just as well as an aftermarket set-up), but just for the "sound?" hmmm I will admit, I am older than some here, but just because a car is loud does not mean it is fast... What about the drone? That is usually the issue when replacing the exhaust... for me, I prefer not to get a headache every time I drive the car... then again mine is a daily driver....

NO WAY. I had my mufflers DELETED and had pipes with 4" polished tips put on. ALL WELDED. AWESOME !!!!!! DO NOT WASTE your money on an AXELBACK. Just my VERY HIGHLY SUGGESTED IDEA. I learned after spending almost $500 for a Hushpower axelback system, which is basically 2 mufflers and some clamps.

The stock exhaust should sound like what the Flowmaster American Thunder catback system sounds like.

Once I'm done with the exterior mods, then i'll start on the preformance end of the car. Most of the parts I'm doing to the exterior I'll be able to swap over to the ZL-1 if need be, so before I start doing the performance i'm going to stick with the stylish end.

If I decide to keep the SS then the exhaust will be changed but if I get the ZL-1 i'm not touching a damn thing.
