Sunroof Ambient Lighting Mod

This mod took a while, mostly since it was 100 degrees outside and the garage is hot with no air. It took 7 hours, but I think it was worth it.

I have it wired up to the lights in the sunroof button, so it comes on with the door panels. Its 2.2mm EL Wire. The drivers front side I still need to play with, its hard doing the corners but I have to wait until it cools down so I can spend time out there.

Here are the colors I had to choose from:

I think the Blue-Green (Middle) will closely match what the door panels are. If I want to replace mine, I'll do it when I put the homelink mod in.

My wife likes it, what do you guys think?

That looks cool as hell! I'd probably dim it a little to match the doors. But its seriously cool. I regret being a cheap ass when I ordered my car. All of my previous cars had sunroofs. Now I just look up at cloth ):

Thanks, glad people like it, its one of those mods where people hate it or love it.

2SSRS, I got the idea from your mod for the concept car roof lighting you are working on. Saw that I might be able to put an ambient light around the sunroof though, and used a cheap EL wire from autozone to test it out.

That was taken by my cell phone, so thats why I chose the green I did. The one I took yesterday was with my true digital camera.

I have to decide if I want to put a dimmer on it and change the color out, or take the door panels off and put EL wire around them.

As far as how to do it, you have to take the overhead console down, unplug the sunroof plug, and wire the inverter tothe black and yellow wires. The actual EL wire just goes around the rubber of the sunroof, then above the headliner foward to the hole where the overhead console is. When it cools off I will take pictures, I have to move the inverter around anyways.

The downside right now is the reason I have to open up the console again, the inverter is right against the headliner with nothing to help absorb the high pitch sound it makes. If you have everything off, you can hear it, just barely, but its there like a nagging wife. So I'm going to wrap it in foam and put it further back into the liner.

Have you had any problems with your El wire fading? I did my dash with it and I am on my third piece in less then a year!
