Absolutely... DOD doesn't define an L99, it just turns 4 cylinders off. Unless they swapped your pistons you are still leader of club L99.

And Owen is my Commanding General. Or he's like that guy in the James Bond movies who makes all the cool gadget weapons and stuff.

*ahem*

I'd like to thank sasquash1984 for that introduction. Getting straight to point:

It really is mostly about the transmission. And has been a highly volotile topic here on camaro5.com for a long time. (Go find the videos and watch them, hillarious)

It's always been a contention the auto tranny is faster on the drag strip than the manual. And to a smaller effect, on a road course. But definitely the strip. And with all the chest beating and arguing and fighting it became clear that we would have to settle it. I was always right in there defending the L99. We got a bad rap by the fuse pull thing and the auto suffered more than the manual because of the torque management of the tranny. My contention was always that, though the manual may be a tad faster in the quarter mile stock, the L99 would be easier and more effective once the mods started coming. And I was right.

More LS3 (manual) guys are out there racing their cars and taking it more seriously. (fun serious) BUT, the auto guys who ARE out there are dialed in. It isn't just about stock anymore. The arguments have died down the more people powered up their cars. Which is why I asked the question, can I keep the 'L99 6.2L' on my hood. I have done the LS3 conversion and so I'm not a full L99 anymore. (I asked more out of fun than for real, I am on this team do to the tranny AND one of the originals )

C5FII was ruled by Team L99. (team automatic) Now in fairness, I'm sure team LS3 wan't seeing it the way we did. We kinda have a chip on our shoulders. So while it was fun to us, they weren't all that 'into' it. (I think it's becaue they know they can't beat us ) But the reason for that is because the auto tranny rules the drag strip. Period.

Road course, ya, maybe a differnet story.

Other than the piston heads, I have an LS3 now. Just thinking is it different now that mine is not an L99 now? 90% of what makes an L99 is gone from my car. It's a hybrid. Technically it's an not a LS3, LS2, LS7, LS9, LSA LSX or any of the factory engines. I'll leave it on there for a while. Til I can figure something out.

I think of it more as L99 = automatic, whereas LS3 = manual (I know that's not the technical definition). I'll stick with team L99 even though my car has also had the LS3 conversion.

Yup. It's all about the tranny.

What's that, maybe 2 HP.

Been discussed. Since it's all about the tranny, we have V6ers on the team.

On a side note, I just spent most of the day reading about the LS engine family. Interesting stuff.

LS4 Sideways install for FWD.
