while anything is possible, the way that rod broke could only be a PTV issue. simply put an NA engine would not produce enough force against that rod to snap it.

My money is still on the single bolt cam. a forged powdered rod is much less likely than a tiny dowel pin. Like I said, ask any Ford engine builder that is building an engine if he trusts a single bolt and a dowel pin. As much as I love GM and LS engines, it isnt the first engine to have this flawed design.

Again, just because so and so built a few of these cars with one and it didn't fail using a single bolt doesn't mean its safe. Now ask someone with a single bolt cam that DID fail if its a good idea. trust me, it would be way simpler for every install we do to use a single bolt cam, less parts to keep in inventory. But we knew 5 years ago when this design came out it was a mistake on GM's part. Maybe not for an OE application, but for the performance enthusiast it it. Again, ask yourselves why after 5 years of using the single bolt, the LS7 still uses a 3-bolt. Why does GM bother to keep making a part using a setup that so many on this board say is unneeded. GM scrutinizes every part used in every aspect of assembly to save money, and they way it against possible warranty cost. There is a reason they have not made the transition in every engine.

Thanks for your input....It was just a theory I had....I understand that I'm never going to know what happened first, or why. I do know that once the warranty period on this crate engine expires, there is not a doubt in my mind that a 3 bolt cam set up WILL be used.

Lesson learned.

I definitely understand needing to theorize. I have been there on trying to figure out a failure on my own car when so many things broke at the same time it makes it that more difficult. I was more or less stating for the people reading the thread to never chance it. while something else could have failed first, you have to go with the most likely suspect, especially since this is NOT the first to have this problem, and I fear, it wont be the last.

Just a quick thought......Is there anyway to read the computer?
What I mean is....is there any memory stored?
You can recall codes etc, is it possible that the computer recorded cam timing, fuel input, RPMs, engine knock (piston or rod going away) from say an anti knock sensor?
If I am not totally out in left field here, these computers make adjustments in the 10-60 times a second...and they "read" different engine sensor inputs to adjust to you right foot.....So

IF and I understand it is a HUGE IF, if there is any information stored on the computer...it may be a way to piece together a sequence of events in the few seconds it took to destory that motor.

I'll go back and hide behind the couch now
