Smile Don't have to pay for onstar nav

You can. The turn-by-turn is extra. The basic coverage gets you the emergency help if the airbag deploys, lockout help and the stolen vehicle help.

This may be old news but did you see the On-Star turn by turn NAV feature that shows up between the speedo and the tach? That should really make all those that were screaming about not having NAV a little happier. It just does not have the fancy graphics, that's all.

If you think about it this is BETTER than a built in Nav system. It does the same thing with a small screen on your dash, its updated all the time (unlike factory systems which eventually they stop making update discs for... which BTW are many times $100 a pop). Ive heard many times of pople with Nav systems a couple years old ending up going places that no longer exist, etc.

Ok so theres no 7 inch scree with pretty graphics, but it does the job, it even has a voice. You can eve pre-plot your route on Mapquest and send it right to your car.

The fin is for XM as well as on star.

So my next question... let's say I don't feel like paying for the safe & sound package. Couldn't I just call up and enable it if something were to happen (keys locked in car, car stolen, etc) and then use it without having to pay for all those months before? Obviously this would be hard if you were in a wreck though heh.

"...send it right to your car?" Wow. How does that work? Do you go onto Mapquest, plot your route and emial/send it to your OnStar account or something like that? Then when you fire up the beast, it downloads the route from OnStar? Am I anywhere close to being right?

Actually, I went to the OnStar site and from any GM On-Star enabled vehicle using the turn-by-turn service, this is how they say it is done:

Yeah, I've got NAV on my Blackberry so I could just use that pretty easily too...but I agree the Onstar option is pretty cool. Wonder if using turn-by-turn is as simple as hitting the On-star button and speaking your way through it...like once you get to turn-by-turn menu, could you just announce the source and destination and be on your way??

I believe there is two ways to get turn by turn. One is through Mapquest and you can also contact on* while you are in the car and tell them where you want to go.
