I've been doing some looking back.......

And found this article:

GM ends rumours: Firebird, Camaro no more
Chris Vander Doelen
The Windsor Star

Friday, February 20, 2004

There will be no revival of the Pontiac Firebird and Chevy Camaro no matter how much the fans wish it, according to a higher authority at General Motors.

How high an authority? Try Bob Lutz, vice-chairman of General Motors. What Lutz says can be taken to the bank and he's just put the kibosh on persistent rumours among enthusiasts that the sporty GM twins might be coming back.

Lutz has revealed that in order to get the CAW to agree to the closure the Camaro plant in Ste. Therese, Que., the company was forced to promise the union it would not build the car anywhere else.

The company intends to honour that pledge, because "a deal's a deal," Lutz said recently. That means no more dead chickens on hoods for a decade or so.

After that? Well, even deal makers do eventually retire.

I do remember the big to-do about the Camaro name. I just wonder, who warmed up the coccles of the CAW's hearts to let them bring the car back so much sooner? (I bet the public reception of the 2006 prototype didn't hurt)

- OR -

If you like a good conspiracy theory..... (and I do )

Perhaps, the CAW and GM knew all along that the Camaro would return in 2009 as a 2010 model..... Perhaps there were 5th gen designs all ready in the works back in 2000, and it was all just smoke and mirrors with the tearing down of Ste. Therese and all the dispelling of rumors by top brass at GM.

Perhaps, they knew all along it would be back, better than ever

I like conspiracy theories

I'd bet it was 100% due to the response of the concept car in 2006

You know, back when they announced the end of camaro, I told my dad, give it 10 years, and they will be back.

I love how the CAW/UAW just bends GM over and goes to town... or does it just seem that way?

Not sure it's a good idea to go there; as I bet there's plenty of UAW/CAW members on this site. Anyway, it doesn't seem so since GM went ahead and brought the Camaro back, despite the original contract or whatever. Besides, everyone wins in the end with this car being back!
