The birth of Orange Krate...

We just got back from Solvang where we did a quick 24 hour trip. My cousin, her daughter and grand daughter flew in from Kentucky to stay with my Great Aunt and her visiting daughter from Oregon(another cousin). A mini family reunion of some of the females from my maternal side of the family.

I was the only testosterone on the trip...be that as it may. Anyway, 8 of us ended up at a nice quaint hotel called the Royal Copenhagen Inn in downtown Solvang (Google it!). We then had a great dinner at AJ Spurs Restaurant followed by a tour of downtown Solvang and then a trip out to the Chumash Casino. This trip is most excellent for a road trip for Camaros! It is the perfect jaunt out from Los Angeles!

Next month I will be uploading a SPECIAL post featuring my Great Aunt Lois. I know all the readers of the Orange Krate journal will be pleasantly surprised by what I post. It is gonna be FUN piece!

Yesterday (Saturday, July 17th) a group of Gen 5 Camaros rode deep into Simi Valley to the Turbonetics Headquarters and Assembly Plant. What a good turnout for the predicted "Carmageddon Weekend". Well those traffic nightmares didn't occur and it turned into Carmaheaven at Turbonetics as we all enjoyed free lunch, raffles, a visit by a special guest...none other than the original "Bumblebee" from Transformers III movie and much more. I have posted up some photos at this link.

Everyone had a great time and Reggie from Turbonetics did a heck of a job putting this event together and getting everyone in and satisfied for the duration of the event. As his post stated...he was exhausted. I think most of us were after all the activities. The weather cooperated, the music and eye candy was most exceptional.

Since I posted photos and video at the link above I will only post one special photo here. The grand daddy of all Gen 5's is sitting next to your's truly.

Thanks Turbonetics and thanks Chevrolet Engineers and Oshawa Production for such a fantastic car!

Sometimes families have sibling rivalries and or complete meltdowns. I am fortunate to have 3 siblings that I love and I know they love me. We grew up in a great town and had wonderful parents. The down side is I don't get to see my brother and sisters very often because we are all busy trying to survive and live in different towns.

Yesterday after the Turbonetics Open House I left and drove to my brother's house in the next town over and we set out for an early evening with my brother taking some classic photos of Orange Krate at Point Mugu Rock on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH Highway 1). This spot has had numerous car commercials shot there. We were hoping to catch the perfect light and Mother Nature did not let us down.

I had no less than three different couples come over and absolutely go ga-ga over Orange Krate. He sat there proudly smiling with that big toothy grill. The driver, me, was also sporting a mondo sized Permagrin. The weather was perfect and afterward my brother and I headed south on PCH to the LA/Ventura County line for some fresh clam chowder at an old roadside restaurant called "Neptunes Net". It is a landmark establishment and has been there for decades. It says it is in Malibu at their website but it is much farther north! Trust me on this one.

Sadly, in my over tired state I brushed slightly against a curb leaving the restaurant in the dark and scratched the right rear rim. My brother was surprised at how calm I was. Inside I was totally ticked at myself but my mind said... hey it could have been worse. PCH is unforgiving with the vehicle accidents that occur on that stretch of highway. It is a true blood alley at times. I will fix my beloved Orange Krate post haste. Not to worry. But I had to vent about it here.

At any rate, I have good memories with my brother Randy (a good photographer) and we look forward to more cockpit time together running down the road listening to the Eagles, loving the So Cal beaches and scenery. More to come soon!

Thanks Randy for being a great brother for over 50 years!!! (Are we really that old??)

Great photos jim. I love that place but I have yet to stop and take some photos of my ride there.

Sad to hear about the scrated rim but soon they will be all fresh and clean and chrome.

Your car looks fantastic! I bet it sounds great. I noticed more bottom end with mine. My brother and I video'd a couple of runs with the car but they didn't turn out very well so we are going to use a different camera and do it again.
