Elevation affecting performance?
How much should elevation effect performance? I was on a deserted piece of highway in Utah and decided to get on it some. At 135 it didnt seem to have much left. This was at about 6000 ft elevation. This sound right? The car runs great around town and at normal highway speeds. Plenty of power.

I wouldnt be all that surprised at 6000ft really. In the salt flats (much lower altitude) the car couldnt get much over 170mph stock. (with the limiter tuned out of course). You loose about 72hp at 6000 feet vs sea level.

HP loss formula:
(elevation x 0.03 x hp @ sea level) / 1000 So 6000 ft x .03 = 180 180 x 400 = 72000 72000 / 1000 = 72 Other factors like Barometric pressure, temperature etc also factor in. You will have even less HP at 6000 ft when it is hot out vs when cool.

Thanks for the math. After looking at the #s 135 looks OK. Next time im on a road trip at a lower elevation ill give her another shot.

Turbo/supercharging does compensate for HP loss at altitude.

I also live at a much lower altitude, Indy,. Utah was where I was at at the time. I could probably go out and try the same test here but I dont want to go to jail. LOL Indy is way more populated than where I was at in Utah. Indianapolis 1,000,000 - Utah ,where I was at, 0. Thanks for the replys. I wanted to make sure my car wasnt broke.
