I owned a 94 Camaro Z-28 w/Auto trans. It was a fun car, but I missed having a manual trans so bad I traded it in on a 95 Z-28 w/6 speed manual. The difference was night and day, and thus my next Camaro will be a SS w/6 speed manual.

That was a crappy 4-speed auto. The new one will be completely different.

Manual 4 Me

When I was 16, my uncle threw me the keys to his old S-10 and told me to run to the store for him. I said "but...but...it's a stick shift!" He said "you'll figure it out."

I've had plenty vehicles since then and I prefer manuals. The only import I've ever owned was a Honda Insight 5-speed (saved my gas money and kept miles of my Colorado Z-71 driving 3700 miles a month!) There are lots of nice shifting tricks you can pull to increase mileage (I got 95 MPG out of that thing regularly) and automatics just won't let you do that. I guess it is an issue of control, when it comes down to it. Then again, I can get 27 in my auto-5-cyl Z71 if I really try...

Now, if the auto in the Camaro is anything like the one in my 65 caddy, and I assume it will be far superior, it really won't make any difference. All 5000 lbs of that thing would fly like a beast straight from hell!

I've tried out the tap-shifting on a few rental cars and a friend's Acura and it just didn't do it for me...it got kinda boring and I would forget to shift and red-line sometimes! I like the feel of a clutch! My poor left leg feels neglected in an automatic. :(

I've had a few 5-speed Fieros and I would never want an auto in that car!

If gas hits $5/gal again,, I plan on using the lessons I learned from that tin can Honda in my new V6 Camaro.

I only read a few of the posts and stopped ....

First off , back in the day autos didn't get as good gas milage as a manual or perform any where as well. Those days are long gone. Todays autos are getting the same milage and can perform just as well or at least really close to a manual.

Second, if you are not comfortable in a manual, you won't drive it. Then what is the point ? This beautiful car that you have spent your hard earned money on will sit in your garage or driveway and not get driven ( at least by you ) because you are uncomfortable with it. I have seen this happen with fellow motorcycle riders alot, they like the idea of riding, they pick out a bike they like and spend a ton of money on a brand new bike only to find out they are not comfortable on it, then it sits until they sell it ....

Go with what you are comfortable with, not with someone else tells you you need. We ordered a manual because this car will not be a daily driver and my wife and I both like to drive a stick, if either of us were uncomfortable with it we would have gotten the auto, heck, with the slapshift option you can pretent to have a manual anyway. lol.

I will be getting the auto with the paddle shifters. My wife needs to be able to drive the car, and if she is distracted I can see her hit the clutch and not the brake - bye bye garage door, Camaro - AND WIFE!

My 30th TA is a six speed but I only drive it on the weekends and pretty much avoid a lot of traffic.....its just downright fun.......autos are boring, but if I had to drive it everyday, hands down I would get an auto....

It really comes down to personal preference or whatever your wife tells you to get... Myself this has has to have the manual, for me, its just part of the fun to me my wife wants me to get automatic so she can drive but im going with the manual... if she wants to drive it and i ever decide to let her she can learn on something else...lol

I have not heard of a manual that does not roll backwards on a hill if clutch is pressed ? i could be wrong.... I have been wrong before

I think you should get whatever is most practical to your life and makes you the most happy when you drive it. I wouldn't give 2 seconds consideration to what others think.

If you are worried about Hills and simple lack of experience shifting manual... Please don't let that be the deciding factor. After about 2 weeks of actually driving it the hills will be an after thought. No worries!!!

I ordered Auto... Tap shift and Auto start is pretty cool stuff.

I've had manuals all my life and I have enjoyed them, they are fun to drive and am very glad that I know how to drive manual transmissions. That being said I'm getting a auto tranny, mainly because I want to cruise and not worry about anything just enjoy the experience. Some will say that by not shifting you are not in control or not having the full driving experience, that may be true to some extent but I modern autos are very different that 10 years ago. A friend of mine has a Ferrari with paddle shifters on an automatic and I don't know anyone that doesn't consider his car a sports cars. I also remember how it is to be in traffic for over one hour with a stick, not my idea of fun. If you have never driven a manual before getting behind a 300 or 426 HP engine is not the right time to learn. Get the car you want, your friends may have an opinion but ultimately you are the one making the payments and the car will be in your carport.

like a friend of mine used to say:

"nothing wrong with getting an automatic, it gives you more time to change your tampon!"

no the fastest muscle cars on the strip were and probably still are 4 speed auto drag cars....dont listen to people who need a stick to make up for something else in their anatomy....manual is fun but doesnt define a muscle car......
