100% agreed. It used to be that the features in Luxury cars were standard on most cars 5 years later it seems. That gap has closed because this technology is so easy to do. I agree. The fact that Camaro does not have it is certainly not a knock on the Camaro. at least not to me. I see what you mean now. |

Geez aren't we a group, five pages so far of arguing a personal preference of push button start or not. My 1969 Camaro had push button start, granted you had to use the key to unlock the steering wheel, but it had a button because the ignition switch was broken and the previous owner figured a button with a hole in the dash was easier than pulling the steering wheel and doing it right. Typically what goes bad in the ignition is the switch, not the key cylinder; those are two separate parts. My 2005 Silverado had the switch go bad at about 100000 miles, easy to replace. If your ignition cylinder is wearing out, take the 100 lbs of other keys and gadgets off your key ring as the weight of that crap is what is killing your tumblers. Harley's come with key FOB's and push button start now. And let me tell you as a Harley owner and die hard fan, if HD did it they are 10 years behind technology minimum. I could care less. I too like to put the key in and turn it, but I wouldn't not buy a car with push start. Actually on the dash to the right of the sterering wheel, isn't there a recessed area where the push button was originally designed to go?

I worked on fire trucks and transit busses back in the day and they were all pushbutton start, nothing new and just a gimmick. I will turn a key over that any day.

my bmw has a push start, but you still have to stick the key fob in place, you just don't turn it. seems kind of counter-intuitive.
they do have the remote starts, so you can leave your keys in your pocket. i hate these, you will forget where the hell your keys are. my friend left hers on her roof and the car started just fine. she drove down the highway and they flew off, never to be seen again. she didn't know they flew off until about 10 miles down the road when her car shut off because the keys were not in proximity. she also didn't have her house key because it was on the keychain that was spattered somewhere on the highway. it was also sunday so she couldn't find a locksmith in a quick amount of time to get her into her apartment so she could get her other key. about midnight the locksmith showed up. partly her fault for sure, but still, that story alone made me never want proximity access to a vehicle. |

My '74 Chevelle had a push button starter where the radio volume control used to be... because I got tired of laying under it in the rain to start it with a screwdriver.

Oh I remember those days too when a header would overheat the solenoid and I'd have to tap it with a hammer and then just jumped the solenoid with a screwdriver while I was under there

The Camaro doesn't have push button start or keyless start. It has remote start on the 2LT (I think?) and 2SS models. You press the lock button on your fob and then hold down the remote start button for 5 seconds. This starts the engine and any climate controls you have set. Once you get in the car, you have to insert the key into the ignition and turn it before you can put it in gear.

Its not only the push button start its also the ability to open the door with out taking the key out of you're pocket (it detects the key in youre pocket and opens the lock automatically)., its pretty dam cool., i wish i had the feature.

All fair points.
Some I think are confusing push button start with remote start. And the way push button start works. Romote start is just a function that lets you start the car while still in the house or whatever to let it heat up or cool down the inside if you preset your climate controls. You MUST have the hood shut. The car must be in park. Car will not do anythning else until you put the key in it. Car shuts off after ten minutes and only allows you to do it twice without putting the key in it. It's not offered on the manual transmission. (though you can do it aftermarket) Push button start is not like the old days where you put the key in and push the button. It completely replaces the key. The car detects the key is inside the cabin and allows the car to be started with your foot on the brake. Never have to touch the key. Also you never have to take the key out of your pocket to unlock and open the door. As soon as you touch the door handle, it unlocks and you open the door. As long as the key is within three or four feet from the door handle. There are goods and bads to it. IMO there are many more goods. Hardly any bads that I've eve experienced. We've had it for years. It warns you when you walk away from it with the car on and no key in the cabin. And I've never had one not work. Except the battery got low. But the DIC gave a warning that said "Key Battery Low" so Bonnie knew to change it. Got a battery at Lowes. If the Camaro had it I would love it. I'd even pay extra for it. I just like it. But I wouldnt' pay more than 100.00 or so for it. Not that important. Quote:

THAT kind would suck. On the Lexus, if you sit in the car, take the key and just put it out the window, it will start beeping at you. Unless you're def, you can't make that mistake. And it won't start if the key is not INSIDE the car. How it detects that, I don't know. But I put it to the test. Quote:

Forget that!!!!! I want to be able to turn the key to hear my cars rumble. But then again I'm old school. I even wish it had the old fashion key and not the switch blade key. It opens in my pocket sometimes.

My grandpa's old wrecker had a push button for the starter right on the floor next to the PTO switch. It also had a push button on the floor for the high beams.
