Only 500 ZL1s?

So I was in a Chevy dealership today browsing Corvettes and I mentioned to the salesperson that I was really holding out for the Camaro ZL1 but whether or not it would appear in a convertible was a selling point for me. The salesperson told me that GM was only making 500 ZL1 Camaros.

... has anyone else heard this rumor? The salespeople there arent known for their integrity so I half believe he was just trying to pressure me into buying a 'Vette but I wanted to see if anyone else had heard this....

Hell, there's probably 500 Camaro5 members who would order them within the first month =]

No, Another company is making a "special edition" ZL1, don't remember if they're making 45 (for the 45th anniversary) or 500, maybe your salesman was misspoken.

I think the special edition is made by an outside party, limited to 69 vehicles. They only made 69 ZL1 cars in 1969.

I was talking to a dealer here in San Diego and according to her they will be making at least 10,000 of those babies. I don't really think anybody has any idea other than GM. Its all about supply & demand. The earliest you can order is Oct/Nov with delivery in January. Thats what I was told by the dealer.

The SLP ZL1 is limited to 69:

Looks like you're in CA so you wouldn't be able to buy/use it anyways:

Which Chevrolet dealer had the salesperson who told you that Chevrolet was going to produce only 500 ZL1s, Courtesy, Capitol, Fremont, or another dealer? I like to be aware of which local dealerships have the most misinformed salespeople. I've found that from experiences over the years that most car salespeople know much less about their high performance vehicles than most car enthusiasts do.

This has been discussed many times on Camaro5. As others have indicated everything that has been officially stated by Chevrolet regarding ZL1 production is that Chevrolet will not limit production and that Chevrolet will try to produce as many ZL1s as the market demands.

There may be a short supply on initial production, just as there was with the convertible, as getting the parts supply chain pipelined filled may take a little while, and there may be some other initial startup glitches, but if one is patient and diligent, everyone who wants a ZL1 should be able to obtain one.

There is an outside chance that he may have meant 500 per month, but I'm more inclined to believe he was just trying to justify a markup on it.

* SLP long-tube headers w/stock cats

* Not legal for sale or use in California.....

Pretty sure long tubes are illegal in Cali.... maybe that's what he was referring to.

Long Tubes are definitely illegal in California. In fact, long tube headers are illegal in many states. It has to do with the length between the engine and the catalytic converter.

Federal law doesn't mandate a pre-determined exact length between the engine and the catalytic converter, but the length of the exhaust tube before the catalytic converter is a Federal emissions issue due to fact that the longer the distance is between the engine and the converter, the more difficult it is for the converter to reduce cold start emissions.

The further the converter is away from the engine the longer the converter will take to reach its light-off temperature (the temperature at which the converter reaches a 50 percent conversion rate). Roughly 80 percent of the emissions measured during Federal emissions testing occur during the first few minutes after cold start. If the converter is too far away from the engine, the vehicle will not be able to pass Federal emission standards and, therefore, will not be able to be certified to be legally driven in any state in the U.S.
