As with any dog breed, proper training and socialization at an early age is a must. According to the UKC, "aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable."[8] The American Temperament Testing Society shows a pass percentage of 86% for American Pit Bull Terriers as opposed to the Golden Retriever with a temperament of 84.9%.[9] American Pit Bull Terriers generally have a lot of energy and benefit from exercise and stimulation to channel their energy properly and avoid becoming frustrated, bored, or destructive.[ This is Straight from the UKC and they've been studying evaluating all breeds of dogs for over 100 years. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. |

Not sure how reputable they are when they say it's uncharacteristic of pitbulls to be aggressive towards humans. I mean, that could be said for every breed out there if raised properly. Just seems like you have to be on your toes and have to raise a pitbull with such precision, that it just seems like it's not worth it to risk the life of anyone around your dog.

People have been more or less brainwashed into assuming that dogs are friendly creatures, "man's best friend." No amount of training and domestication will ever eradicate the dog's primary instinct: survival. Make any dog feel threatened and he or she will react accordingly, doesn't matter what breed it is. That being said, proper care and training can increase a dog's tolerance level. Make no mistake though, EVERY dog has a breaking point. Doesn't matter if it's a Pit Bull or your neighbor's Golden Retriever.

The pitbull was bred to be a baby sitter!
It's in their nature to be gentle watch dogs. Dogs will always revert to their breed roots and to what they were meant to be. It's humans who refuse to let them and turn them aggressive. For every pit attack story there are hundreds of others from different breeds. I can tell you the one factor behind every dog attack, and it's not the breed.... |

I love how people are saying "do your research and you will find that breed X bites more than a Pit" , but every dog bite website shows the pit as number 1 by at least DOUBLE.
As far as German Shepards go, how many pitbulls are on the Police force ?

The same could be said about the human race. It only take one individual to snap and then we are on the so called witch hunt.
All I know is some people will always be afraid of this breed; do to how society preceived this breed. They will get one thing in their mind and nothing will change. All I know is that I refuse to live in fear. Fear of the un known is not the way to live. Until I really got to expeirence this breed first hand then I had a change of thoughts about on this breed. I love my pit and I usually laugh inside, when someone says.......YOU HAVE A PIT. Fear of the un known.

The local SPCA is full of Pit Bulls. I would never take one of those dogs. Even though I have gotten all my dogs from the Humane League or the SPCA. I have two and a half Cocker Spaniels, four previous Cockers have long ago passed away. Like Forrest said," Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what your gonna get." This is true of a rescue dogs. We have a Cocker that came from Georgia, and she was abused. We have her over three years and she has really changed for the good, she finally has a good home. I always talk to and pet the Pit Bulls and only a couple over the past years were not friendly to me. My uneducated opion is get a puppy if you want a Pit Bull.

So I guess we know for a fact that the pitbull in the OP was abused and/or not trained right? That's the only explaination, right?
I'm not saying he wasn't, so as far as we know, no one is right...

Come on. The Yugo was one of the worst cars ever built ,but I bet that there are a few people that owned them that say "Boy that was a great car. I can't understand why they got a bad rap." Sure there are going to be a few good Pit Bulls out there ,but the facts don't lie. I'm sure that the majority of people that owned Pit bulls that did attack believed that they had a trained dog too. |
