Question First oil change at 75 miles or not? Does it really get gunk out?

I have heard from two different camps.

Some people claim that an oil change that early is worthless because modern engines go through an extensive break-in period and there are no metal scrap or shavings to come off in the oil.

But others claim they did a 50 - 100 mile oil change on their Camaro and they saw a significant amount of stuff come out in the oil, and they were later glad they did.

So an oil change schedule of...
75 - Conventional
500- Conventional
1500 - Synthetic

is probably extreme overkill? or not? More opinions please...

That is probably overkill. Doing the first change at around 1000-1500 miles is probably not the worst idea, though.

Regardless of the schedule you follow though, if you are talking about the LS3, it should be synthetic every time, or at least something that meets that new Dexos standard.

Did my first changes at 800 and 1600 and then after that every 5000 miles.

I changed mine at 500 miles and saw nothing unusual in the oil.

the schedule you stated is WAY over kill......but what I have always done is do teh first one at 500 miles....then from then on, just the regular schedule. and I run synthic....I have a V6, and at my first REGULAR oil change I changed over to it.

Wow, way too much, IMO. I did my 1st one at 1500, and will do all others at 5K. Full synthetic of course.

75 is overkill. I do my first at 1,000 and put in a magnetic drain plug. Then at 5,000 and every 5,000.

What is the advantage of having a magnetic drain plug?

or, here's a novel idea, follow the oil change schedule that the manufacturer recommends. after all, they are the ones who will warranty it until 100,000 miles.

I changed mine at 150ish or whatever it is from Dallas to Austin.
When I first got my motorcycle I changed the oil at 50 miles and got some milling crap out of it.

An oil change is cheap insurance, if you have the means to do it yourself I say do it. My car is about to hit 1850 miles and I have already changed the oil twice with my third change coming up this weekend. After that I will let it go every 3k miles.

Cheers
K
