You answered your own question about the concrete thickness... Could inset a 1/4 plywood bowtie then fill it with stained concrete or epoxy.
If you have an iphone, check out "clinometer" and "Theodolite" apps.

A 1/8" steel (aluminiunmum-uinimunm) plate bowtie with countersink bolts every few inches around the perimeter would look sweet!

Just wanna throw this out there, I'm no concrete guru by any stretch, just seemed like a good idea if it'll work... maybe use fiberglass reinforcement around the edges of the bowtie so it would be less prone to crack/chip... that make sense?

the garage floor????? sounds like a lot of work! I am thinking a 3ftx6ft plywood insert like you mentioned... put it 8 feet inside the main garage door! Then fill it with stained or dyed concrete. probably would have to make it at least 1 inch deep huh.. or more? I am trying to google to see if anyone has detailed directions on how to do that. but coming up empty handed... should be pretty self-explainatory, but, thought i could find it online... any luck ony our end? |

I would make 6" and trowel contraction joints every 12-15 feet. Concrete will crack, it's about controlling where it does. Placing it in 2 pours would be best in a
checkered pattern. Planning on putting a gravel layer down as a vapor barrier too? |

This is one step that I will have hired out. I am sure whoever I go with make sure they have everything that is usually required for this area. |

I was thinking smaller but yes, countersunk bolts around the bowtie... OR...
Have about 2x6 area pan about 1/8 inch deep in the floor, paint this in the pan and fill it level with clear epoxy. ![]() ![]() ...err maybe not... epoxy would get scratched up and dull

Check it out... Might be too much maintenance for a shop floor, but it sure looks cool
