Silly question. If mom will buy a ZL1, she is foolish. Where I live, I see kids in high school driving new Mercedes, BMWs, Vettes, etc., because mom and dad are loaded. Kid wrecks car, kid gets a new one. Giving ANY kid a car with that kind of power is dumb, temptation to check out that power will eventually win. Then lack of driving skills results in tragedy. In this case, if you're not going to use that power, why not save mom some money and get a V6?

At 32, I may not have the life experience of some others, but I'm not about to insult someone for their lifestyle or whatever.

However, given that, regardless of resources, there is no way I can see giving a 17 yr old a brand new car:
1) Unless they have been driving illegally, they don't have the experience behind the wheel regardless of how mature they are as a person.
2) You don't give a 500+ HP car to a beginner driver regardless of it being new or used. This is a car we are talking about, not a toy. 3500+ lbs of metal and force. People die from these things because of mistakes and inexperience. Knowlegable drivers still die from uncontrollable situations.

To put this kind of car in the hands of a beginner could be a lethal decision. Not saying he will, but there is a reason teenager insurance is higher for a reason.

Everyone knows these cars have bad blind spots and hard to see visual spots. Putting those in the hands of a beginner could lead to a fatal situation as well.

My preference would be, if I was a parent, get the OP a starter car. It doesn't have to be a beater, it doesn't have to be something falling apart, but something to where he can learn and show that he can handle the road and all the situations that driving has to offer. THEN, once he has proven he can, then upgrade the car.

But I cannot see throwing a 17 yr old into a 500+ HP brand new car for any reason.

Just my .02

Bloody bollocks! Foiled and fooled again! (Unlike what The Who sang about.) I must don the Grocery Sack of Shame for being lulled in by a troll and his ilk. Oh, the humanity of it all.

How can I ever show my face in public again, riding neath the hardtop of my GenV Camaro? How can I post upon this forum without the ridicule of my peers being heaped upon my shameful head? Oh, that I were as sharp and fast as those who are the Omniscient of Trollology.

Pray tell, thou that are of that stature, thou who art one of the Omniscient of Trollology, canst thou but offer unto us, who are not that savvy in your ways, a glimmer of your allknowing wisdom, so that we too may take advantage of said wisdom, and not fall prey again unto these trolls? Wilt thou but offer up a grain of your all encompassing knowledge to the least of us? We beseech thee, be generous to us.

One of the few, the proud... oh, different commercial.

You are definitely in the minority. I remember growing up, all we could afford were muscle cars to drive to school (sounds weird now). Our school parking lot was way cooler than any you'll see out there today. Road Runners and other Mopars with 440 6-packs, LS6 Chevelles, my 442, and 67 SS Chevelles, GTOs, Mustangs, etc., were actually kind of NORMAL to see in the crowd I hung around with. The other crowds drove the 4-door Novas, Dodge Darts, and grocery getter cars. All the "normal" people called our ilk "motorheads".

People thought gas prices were high back in the 70s and dumped the gas hogs for cheap. We got them as 17 year olds. And people did some DUMB stuff with those cars. And they were nowhere near as safe as they are today. It's a wonder there weren't more fatalities. It's not just whether a car runs 14s, 13s, etc. The tires sucked, power was abundant, passengers ponied up a buck or so for gas (and ill-gotten beer if someone happened to have a few extra bucks) and cars would get squirrely on the streets without much prodding. I've seen many wrecks because people couldn't handle the car. More than one time I've come close to crashing my 442 because it got out from under me.

Today, with much more driving experience, I doubt I'd hand over keys to a high-horsepower car if I had a teenage kid. Not because I didn't want them to have some automotive fun. But because I actually cared about not hurrying them to make dumb choices. I think a 2LT would be the top model for my theoretical 17 yo to drive, regardless of their maturity level.

Life's about choices. Which makes you as a person, defined by those choices. Choose wisely.

...but unfortunately, not lucky enough to find any punctuation keys on your keyboard. Who is to blame; you, or your parents?
Go back to school, and please keep your 700 HP Camaro, rubber-side down.

I always get a kick out of how somebody will make up a question in order to get everyone going and it moves on to different tangents, which eventually has you guys ragging on one another
