Vehicle Speed Sensor diagnostic code on all OBD-II vehicles (1996 and later). Yes, while it can be located in the wheels, it can also be located in the transmission or drive axle. This is what displays vehicle speed.

Wheel Speed sensors are used for calculating ABS, traction control, and stability control. These are of course always at the wheel behind the brakes.

Of course when you skid and slide your wheel speeds are all different from your vehcle speed.

Besides, if a VSS was in fact faulty he would have a check engine light or service vehicle message on the DIC.

Which is why I suspect a software issue in the ECM or IP controller.

Interesting... I had always assumed Vehicle speed was calculated based on the wheel speed sensors (3rd fastest) or what not. And yea my background is controlled brakes - not powertrain - so not super surprised I have't heard of this I guess.

Thanks for the info

This weekend I drove to Yuma,AZ, from CA, and there it was 100 degrees. As soon as I entered the vehicle, and started the engine, all the needles on the dash didn't work, all stayed in place, saying 0mph(even while driving), 0rpms, empty fuel...
Now it's working, and the needle for the speedometer, took the longest to go back to work. Every time I parked and let it sit for at least 3 hours it happened.
For the first 10 mins driving not even the digital speedometer worked.
Any one experiences similar?

I was driving about 83mph, in the highway coming back to CA, the speed limit was 70mph, but I got a citation for 91mph. I'm going to a dealer and check it out, as I don't want that citation on my record.

Heat expansion is causing the arms to stick againts the backing plate. Once the car cools down insided the parts contract and it starts working again. Probably going to need a new cluster or it will happen everytime it gets this hot.

That would be correct Mdipinto. Under normal circumstances a fix like this would be covered under your bumper to bumper warranty. Hopefully a quick trip to the dealer is all you need and you can get back to enjoying your vehicle (as police apparently know all too well). If you have any problems let me know.
