The auto industry belongs IN the United States, not in North America (Canada or Mexico), too many cars are being built outside our borders... Thats a fact...
My 67 Camaro was built in California, and my 69 in Norwood OH.
My 99 in Canada, as is my Impala, and my forth coming 2010 Camaro...
Lets hope we can build them, where we drive them!

you should consider yourself lucky that the Camaro is being built in one of the most advanced plants that GM has.......The cars that are rolling out of the Oshawa plant have been rated superior in quality to similar lines coming out of plants in the good ol USA time and time again. There are no fixed borders in the US auto industry of today, most parts come from either Canada, Mexico, China, Malaysia etc etc than come from the states. If you dont want a car that was assembled in Canada, dont buy it, simple as that. I love corvettes, did the fact that all corvettes are assembled in BG kentucky make me not want to buy one, nope, not at all
Its protectionist thoughts like yours that will keep the economy in the dirt for years to come

Just so I'm not misunderstood here, yeah, I am canadian. I live in Western Canada....Calgary Alberta to be exact. We are about as right as one can get on the political spectrum, which places us pretty dead centre on the american scale. There are some policies and ideologies from the USA that I do not agree with, but I am still proud as hell to have the US as my 'neighbour' and would not have it any other way!!

I'm just worried about the american muscle car becoming a dying breed. That is a big reason i'm getting the camaro now.....I want to make sure I own one at some point in my life.

Can you imagine a world without cars like the Camaro and Mustang?? Can you imagine driving to work in a sea of 'smart cars'.....geeze might as well buy a bicycle.

(by the way nothing against smart cars...just not my thing.) Goverment getting involved in a company's management decisions just makes me darn nervous.

a google search will bring you back some info on henderson, he's been with GM since 84 apparently, so IMO at least it's someone who's been with the company for a while, not some random getting tossed at the helm of GM. I'll wait it out and give him a chance to prove what he can do before i start judging the guy.

There's only so much you can do when the government is subsidizing your foreign competitors, siding with the union, and preventing you from changing to align with the market due to poorly conceived franchise laws. Not bad, all things considered.

Also, funny how no one cares that the banks execs are keeping their jobs. We only want to punish the auto industry.

And what is wrong with Canadian built cars? Oshawa is one of the top rated GM plants. They make high quality stuff. I'm glad those fine workers are building my Camaro. And if Canadians are working, they can buy stuff, including products that are made in America or are supported by American jobs.

Anyway, I want to know more on Henderson. Can we get more detail?
I can't speak for the rest of your post, But I agree 100% about The Oshawa plant and the lucky B#$%*##S that get to put this amazing car together!! That work there!

Nothing wrong with cars being built in Canada... remember that it was GM investments that made it state of the art.
Its all business... but with the US nearing 10% unemployment, yea, I want to protect the homeland and its jobs!

Thats actually a lot of what was being talked about today Fever... Good point..

I was watching the BBC daily news and they were talking about how GM's restructuring might make it several independant companies. With GM keeping its core brands (GMC, Chevy, Cadillac, BUick) and a few internationals (GM-Daiwoo, Suzuki AUTO) and some European labels as well. Then moving Holden, Vauxhall, Saab off onto their own.

Very interesting stuff...

It almost looks exactly like what they tried doing to Microsoft at the end of the last decade.

I was wondering everyones take on Fritz Henderson and what this might meen to the future of the Camaro, the Gen V engine, any "High Performance" edition in the future. Obviously right now the company is not in the position to put out a "HI-PO" Camaro but I am wondering what everyone take is on Henderson and what direction he will take the company. I am still hoping to buy a S/C Camaro Z-28 in 2010-2011. What are the chances? Or at least an SS with a Gev V v8.
Slim to none, my friend....Slim to none....If GM goes bankrupt in 59 days, you can kiss the convertible, AND the Z-28 goodbye.

Well look, To be a good american car company it will have to lead the industry in achieving a small carbon footprint and should look like some form of vanilla transportation and everyone should own the same color and model. When I studied socialoism and traveled abroad I came across the perfect model er aaaah. It was called a Yugo! This was a quote that was cut from his speach today.

im not too worried about the near future of the camaro, at least the next five years as long as they maintain good sales. it would be completely ridiculous to only let this car run for two or three years. i mean really, how much has GM spent on the camaro project until now. they need to sell a lot of cars for it to be profitable, and that means keeping it around a while. my fear is for the sixth gen and whether they will be able to build another sports car in the future, at least six years away. there's a lot of time between now and then and a lot can change. so for a while, im not worried.

I do think that GM's future is questionable, thats why I am doing my part to help, by purchasing a New Camaro and hopefully a new G8 for the wife this fall. Do any of us know what's going to happen? Probly not, we didnt see this financial mess coming ( at least if we did, we ignored it). Otherwise, I look forward to GM developing what they always have. Affordable power to the masses.

Wagoner got fired by the President of the United States. How many bank CEOs got fired? I didn't know that was part of his job...to run the private sector as well. All the past presidents have really done a piss poor job of that. Now that the private sector is being run by government (President Obama)....everything is political.
