Retro or not???

Hi:

I am new to this site and I find it very informative. But my wife and I had dicussion last night and could up not come up with a good soultion. The question were:

1. If you were going to build a retro camaro? Why no SS badging on the front?
2. No vinyl roof?
3. No SS badging on the side?
4. No hideaway headlight?

I would interested in anyones thoughts>>>

Welcome to the site!
It is a concept that is inspired from the 69 maro more than a retro of the 69 maro.

It is a Neo-Retro design

If you order the SS you get the SS badge, same with the RS package.
I'm almost positive that was the way it was back in 67-69 too, although I was still running around in onesies back then so the memory may be a bit foggy.

You know, I am relatively new also and don't post much, but those same thoughts ran trough my head and the SS badging is very simple. The vinyl top would work, but just is not relevant anymore (I don't think). As far as the hide-a-way's are concerned they could have easily done those and that would have sealed the SS/RS package as true heritage and looke awesome. I'm there with you.

Thankfully vinyl tops have died. Too many got water under them and caused rusting. I believe the original idea was to make it look like a raised convertible top, but never really did. And as others said it is inspired by the '69, not designed to be a reproduction.

The new Camaro isn't a retro car. It is an all new design that has reflections of it's heritage.

It's been said before. It's inspired by the first gens, but is not designed to be a retro reproduction of them. The SS and RS badges show up on the front, but in the Z/28 badge's original position.

2. No vinyl roof?
Probably not that relevant today. Instead we'll have people applying two-tone paint jobs. I'm also not sure that the "seam" between roof and body would make this look decent.

I don't really have a response for this one other than you could do it if you wanted, and then it would be a little more unique to you.

I think you're underestimating the planning/design changes it takes to implement something like hide-away lights. Where would the doors go on this model? How would they work? How could GM make sure that they would never fail? Fbodfather mentioned this recently and, if I recall correctly, it just wasn't practical to add that feature.

Some food for thought: the C6 doesn't have the hide-away lights that were a feature on Corvettes for so long. Why?

For kicks, here's a mock up I did of what the lines would probably look like for a "vinyl top":

Instead, people will do this (much better, in my opinion):

Suggest that you get "Camaro - Rebirth of a Legend" --

IN the book you'll find many photographs - and an entire chapter about how the concept was designed.

The entire team felt that to do a 'retro' Camaro would be limiting its appeal.

Most people who say "you should have made it more retro" -- are over 50 -- and the reality is that the new Camaro MUST appeal to a wider audience.

Thus -- there were several designs -- but Mr. Wellburn pushed the team to push further out...........

If you take a new Camaro -- and over it in white silk, it does not look like a Camaro in profile -- but when you remove the silk, you see a fresh design with "heritage styling cues"

I won't go into the hidden headlights issue again -- I've written about it until I'm blue in the face.........

One last thought: I would not want to 'repaint' the Mona Lisa --

.........and one needs to be careful when 'redoing' a 1969 Camaro -- it could come off looking like a 1970 Barracuda!

Thanks for everyones ideas! I really like the concept of the vinyl roof. VERY well done. My 2SS is on the way and I will have to make a few moifications for myself. I still think that SS badge and hidden lamps would have been a true RS/SS hertiage!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Retro would be alum velours on the back window. Shag carpet with dangle balls. A pair of large fuzzy dice and a steel chain steering wheel.

(lol you said retro.. just .. not where retro.. ).
