It can't be fixed. There is less energy in a gallon of ethanol than in a gallon of gasoline. Similarly, there is more energy in a gallon of diesel. The more energy you have per gallon, the further you can go with that gallon. There are things that could be done to make an E85 vehicle have the same mileage as a normal car. But do those same things to a normal car and it will then get better mileage.

The heating of current shale oil reserves within the US would be enough to supply all of our oil/fuel needs for the next 100 years. The technology exists to heat the shale as well, it just hasn't been seen as economically viable up to this point. Maybe that'll change and we can finally get over our foreign-oil dependency.
Ive read that there is aHUGE amount of oil in Alaska. But there's like sand or some other kind of contaminant in it that would increase production cost.

Hatter Im with you. we need to start getting "our oil". It almost makes me think that the government is making money off of the oil prices. all this talk about "fuel efficient cars" really needs to be put on the back burner! If my car got 30 miles to the gallon paying 4+ dollars will still put a dent in my income. becoming independant from overseas oil needs to be our primary objective, especially with all of the resources that we can tap into! Then worry about getting more miles to the gallon!

Yeah Alaska does have a lot of oil but what I'm referring to is a separate issue. Shale oil is basically a solid substance that, when heated, can be made into crude oil. It's a lengthy process (like 2 years to finish the heating process) but there are enough shale oil deposits within the US to eliminate our dependency on foreign oil for approx 100 years.

For comparison, the US shale oil reserves are even larger than the crude oil deposits in Saudi Arabia.

Frankly the gov needs to start focusing on promoting shale oil initiatives or other alternate fuel source initiatives rather than creating mpg regulations like CAFE in my opinion.

Yeah...I know what your talking about...I was just trying to say that we have 2 very "do" able options to end our dependancy on middle eastern oil. But instead we want to give the car companies a hard time with new regulations. Thats why i feel like somehow the Gov. is profiting off of the situation

Funny you mention this, I've been thinking about writing an article on the very subject. As stated above I believe a bigger factor in the death of muscle cars was the high premiums insurance companies assigned to them in the late 60s. I don't think the price of gas was as big of a factor; people were still driving, it was availability that was an issue if I recall.

I think in the long run we'll survive this summer's gas prices. I don't see them going down to prices last year, but I do see them plateauing once Americans understand gas isn't cheaper than milk anymore.

I just paid $4.35 for BP 93 45 miles north of Chicago IL.

I only drive 62 miles a month to work and back.

I hope it doesn't go over $5 a gallon, but its not a big deal to me.

I sold my 2004 Tundra crew cab 4x4 TRD with a 4.10:1 posi because it got 10-12 MPG. If I get 15 MPG in town with the SS I don't mind.

Plymouth Muscle Cars

The addition of mandated 5mph bumper guards was the only changes to the 1973 Barracuda. Nevertheless, sales increased slightly, largely the result of heavy promotion and the discounting of option prices. The six cylinder engine was dropped this year and the 340ci small block was only available
