Not elitist, reality.

What it does not do is address the "pot" from which the budget will come. For those who are in their sixities, you might be talking about people on fixed incomes that are not working, can't work, or almost retired, and are willing to recalibrate (lower) retirement options to realize a once in a lifetime opportunity, not only in terms of owning a piece of history, but of having the joy of realizing an emotional lifetime dream that in all honesty, they may not ever get another chance at grabbing for. You can lean off the horse to grab that golden ring, but lean too far and you may just fall on your face. Talk about a balancing act. Decisions, decisions! Good luck to all in making your decison! :flag1:

PS: Hats off to all our troops!
Everyone of course has to do what is best for their family. For me it is the ZL1 or nothing. The only reason I'm looking at a new car right now is because the ZL1 exists - no other car is on my radar. I have a limit like everyone else and if the MSRP creeps much above $60,000 I'll have to wait for 2013. If the MSRP is mid-high $50s I'll be excited and if is lower than that I'll be jumping for joy. I'm preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. I feel lucky even to be considering the possibility of getting one and when I'm a proud owner I'll feel even more privileged. Good luck to everyone!

Lowend 50K before dearler charges and taxes, highend 75K before dealer charges and taxes. That my best guess. These fees cost me an extra 4 grand on my 1SS.

Well ..for me if its 57-60 plus, I feel I can build a better car for my purposes than the ZL1.
For regular driving on the street, straight line acceleration with decent handling is more my interest, and ring times might as well be the time it takes for my phone to ring, 'cause like many others it means nothing to me or anyone I know.

I think the main problem here is that alot of us were wanting a high performance Camaro, and all wanting it so bad we are willing to jump on the bandwagon for a car we don't really want.
I think GM really missed the boat on this one for the enthusiasts if they charge too much.
The real target audience they are apparently shooting for doesn't buy Camaros, and after the initial rush (bored wealthy people, so called "collectors",status seekers and racing teams) this car will be a sales flop over time based on a speculative too-high price.
Why GM would spend the money they obviously spent to produce a low volume car is beyond me.
If you want to build a low volume car that Camaro enthusiasts will buy, and make some money on it because really no new engineering is required, build a stripper Camaro with an LS9, the heavy duty diff, and call it a day. Yey I'll buy one!

It's only speculation at this point as to the price, but what a lot of people are saying on this site, is Chevy built the wrong car if its priced north of 55, not that they can't afford it. I'm not complaining about the amount of money involved, I intend to pay cash for mine if I get it, and I could afford 100k for that matter, all I and others are saying is that paying more than 54 for this car is not worth it for our needs and desires from the car. If you live in Germany, or like to road race on a track, then 60-70 is probably good value for the engineering. Yes, I appreciate the engineering, yes I like an excellent handling car, but no I don't need magnetic shocks, and no I don't need traction control, or suede, or nav,or 20 speakers etc. etc.
I guess the thinking at Chevy was that the 500 has light weight and lots of power, our car is heavy, so lets aim for handling rather than lb/hp.
I wish that if indeed Chevy is planning a powerhouse stripper they would let me know so I can save my money and not buy one of these and wait for the alternative. people in the know PM me if you like. Then we can just let the people who want to road race or have a status symbol buy these cars and we can wait for what we want.

The good news is that if it ends up being on the far end of the spectrum.... There is room for another model in between!

Chevy should remember that they used to build cars that were in reach of most buyers. I like this zl1 very much and if I had the resources that would allow 60k or more, then as a chevy fan I would keep it in mind.

However, there are more neutral buyers out there that might not care about camaro or its legacy; Thus some cynics may say that 60k is outrageous (for any chevy...thats including corvette), given the brand's reputation for low priced automobiles.

Chevy will need to keep the car reasonable. I don't mind paying for the powertrain, but (my recommendation, again) keep the gadgets, fur carpets, power-everything items out of it (as best as possible) so that diehard chevy fans can have a chance to get a great car that is reachable in price.

It should come with the Accident Avoidance System as an option.

The ZL1 should be considered a flagship model of the Camaro. I knew from the beginning that it would be more car than I "would" afford. I fully respect it and the fact that it adds value to the entire Camaro line. It was VERY wise from a marketing standpoint for GM to make the ZL1. However, knowing what the basic content of the ZL1 would be has lead me from the beginning to push for a more track oriented performance and decontented (from the ZL1) "Z28" Camaro. Now that the desire has been increased for a higher performing Camaro one that is more reasonably priced should sell very well.

Bottom line: not everyone wanting the best and top of line can/will afford it. That is why lesser models sell. They give you the part of belonging without the hefty price tag.

I thought i read a few months back that gm was making about 8 grand profit off each SS sold? Also that they didnt expect the v8 model to outsell the V6? Well with that much money made off the SS's, i am sure that there is plenty to be made off of the ZL1 and maybe just maybe they can afford to make the car more affordable to us. I guess my point is, maybe make less profit per car, but be able to sell more cars if the price was more reasonable. They cant afford to have the Oshawa plant only make 5000 camaro's a month and still keep the plant affordable. I am holding onto 50k or less base.
