It was a 9 shot .44 caliber that also had a 16 gauge center barrel just below the main barrel, for a single shot in close (I think he made a .36 caliber version too). It was made famous by Confederate General Beauregard, although many others carried them as well, like J.E.B. Stuart. There currently is a modern version of the LaMat for sale.

I like shooting my issue Glock 19 at the range and it would be hard for me to part with it. If I could carry any other gun I would go with a browning .38...extensive tests have been done on it. It rarely if ever jams and is a durable gun.

If either you or your wife are not real familiar with handguns in general, stick with a small or medium frame revolver in .38 or .38 +P chambering. Then sign both of you up for a certified gun safety and handgun shooting course with a local gun club or a NRA certified instructor.

For a home defense weapon, you DON'T want a gun that'll shoot through
multiple walls, specially if you have kids or live in the suburbs where the houses are close together. A shotgun is a great home defense weapon as long as you load it with light shot (7 to 9 shot non-magnum loads), no 00 or slugs.

For revolvers get some BAT (if legal in your area) or Glaser safety rounds for the house. These types of rounds are designs to penetrate just a couple layers of clothing and then fragment inside the flesh for maximum trauma to the target with an very reduced hard penetration, so you have less fear of them going through walls and hitting someone or some thing that isn't your target.

Stay away from semi-autos until you and your wife have a few years experience with handguns in general and how semi-autos work specifically.

Thanks for your help guys. I think we'll stick with a shotgun, probably a Remington, to start. Seems to make more sense if I'm suddenly roused out of bed in the middle of the night. I would like to become proficient with a sidearm though. Just seems like a good skill to have.

It is pretty much a cardinal rule not to shoot what you can't see when it comes to gun safety.

It's a Cardinal Rule of any gun that if you raise that weapon, you had better be prepared to kill what you are aiming at. If you can't, you have no business owning one. That being the case, get something of the .45 caliber variety. I recommend Springfield Arms. Always be sure of your backdrop, and like I said, always be prepared to kill. It may seem harsh, but it's true.

Everyone has their own OPINION on what guns are good for home safety. Shottys or handgun??? Its really up to what your comfortable shooting. Take some time to explore before you purchase..... Go find a good gun range that lets you rent a variety of different guns. It may cost a little bit to do but atleast you will have peace of mind that your comfortable in what your firing.
Just another opinion for you to ponder!

I have 20/20 vision. I'm just not instantly alert and focused when I get up. I don't expect to wake up in the middle of the night and be sharp as a whip right away... I just figured a gun range at 10AM is not like my own home at 3AM in total darkness. Though there isn't any consensus, it seems like a shotgun is better for a situation where I wake up and I'm not sure what's going on except that someone might be in my house somewhere.

If you get a shotty for home defense purposes, I recommend you leard to combat load! Hell everyone should know how to combat load if you own a shotgun. I was part of my gun quals in the military.

heres a basic combat load

heres an advanced combat load

and world record combat load

heres my fav shotgun
