Actually this isn't to heat up just the engine. Its to also warm up the cats. Catalytic converters need to reach their minimum operating temperature before they can clean the exhaust gases properly. That's why even if the engines warm, the car will idle high to warm the cats.

i drive my car once a week. so when i start her up. i sometimes will hold the RPM at about 1.5k to get things going better. only for like 10-15 seconds

Mine takes a minute or so to warm up. It will actually shake til it warms up. She wants to go!
