Big thanks to Silverhawk for introducing me to his friend at the DMV who hooked me up with a couple 5 digit tags.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the significance of black DE tags? I know in MD, different designs usually mean something different [ex. Chesapeake, Agricultural, etc.].

No significance really...its just a reproduction of an early tag. You have to have a tag number that is 5 digits or less in order to get one though.

I think someone else posted a link to DE tags. BUT in a nutshell the black and whites are issued by the DE historical society and they are only available for certain low number tags--- those which were available prior to 1941 hence the low numbers you will see. Its a status symbol for the most part. The tags are hard to get these days and people usually pay big money to get ahold of the lowest numbers. A few years ago the DE #6 tag sold at auction for $675,000.00

Even cooler is that my wife's tag is the next number up from mine. She ordered herself a black plate as well...

Some people have more money than brains ,

but hey if someone is willing to someday pay me alot of money for the number license plate on my car than I will play along. If all else fails I can sell my tags. The ones I have are probably worth anywhere from 4 to 7 thousand. The one will hurt my feelings though because I actually got ahold of the C tag with my badge number.

P.S. in the same auction I mentioned above they also sold a "dead" original #6 plate from back in the 1940's which sold for $38,000.00 now talk about dumb that much money and no rights to use it????

Yeah, I never really understood all that. I like my black tags cause it looks better on the cars. The thing is, is you could get a really low one by just goin to register your car. Rumor is that all the big wigs keep the low low #'s that arent takin yet locked away for some stupid reason but if you want a black tag all you need to do is tell them when your getting your registration what you would like and as long as its under 86000 you can get a black tag. Cost ya like 60bucks or so.
